Hi I have a Canon 7d which I love ,I do nature photography with 600 f4? 300 f2.8 70>200 f2.8 mk11 but would like a Canon camera that deals with noise better at higher iso .Im looking to replace it in Feb any ideas ?
 
I have a 7D with the 500mm f/4L and am looking to get a 1D Mark IV (or the vastly cheaper Mark III). Both 1.3 crops and evidently excellent at high ISO noise handling.
 
70D? Perhaps too close to what you've got maybe?

5D3 very good at high ISO and superb AF. Best all round camera I've owned.

1D MkIV. Not as good as the 5D3 at high ISO. Perhaps 2/3 of a stop worse. IMHO. But still a great camera with superb build quality.

As always there are rumours about new bodies coming out etc, If you're looking to replace in Feb, perhaps Canon will have launched / said if they are going to replace the 7D with a new model...

As of now, I'd probably be looking at the 1DmkIV or 5DmkIII (although you will loose the crop factor)

Only partly lose the crop factor. These bodies are both 1.3 crops so there is a bit of compromise.

Yes, you are right, I read it as 1DIII and not 5DIII. I'm off to smash my face with a brick as I'll not tolerate such self sloppieness.

Remember though that the 5D III has a higher megapixel count, so cropping can still result in decent size images.

When I first received my 6D, I compared it to my 60D by shooting two images at 300mm with both bodies at ISO 1600. I cropped the 6D image down to the same field of view as the 60D to compare. The noise from the 60D was much worse at full size, and was still worse even when the image was resized to match the cropped image from the 6D. I sold the 60D straight away. Not so sure about low ISO work, but I never seem to have enough light to shoot distant objects with long lenses at low ISO anyway (my fastest long lens is the 300/4L).

Full frame cameras have better quality pixels, just some food for thought :)
 
Interesting to know! do you still have said pictures where you compared the 6D crop to the 60D?
 
I swapped my 7D for a 70D in august as I was fed up with the high ISO performance of the 7D. The 70D handles noise far better IMO than the 7D and I'm now happy to use the 70D in any situations. I also have a 5D3 that I use as my primary body and when I had the 7D the 5D3 was in use about 90% of the time. Now with the 70D I use the 5D3 about 60% of the time, I've started using the 70D for all my macro shots and most of my wildlife/aviation shots as well. I've just got a Canon 300 f4L IS and I tried that on the 70D the other day and I was blown away by the IQ of it, even with my Kenko Pro300 DGX 1.4x converter on it was still fast to focus and gave a great IQ too.
 
I like crop cameras, helpful for wildlife and like to buy new but if its a full frame could crop myself think I will wait and see what Canon do .

Me too and am anxiously waiting to see what Canon have up their sleeves for 2014. So many rumours, but that's all they are. I would be tempted by a 1D mk4, and keep looking at the 5D 3, but would miss the crop factor, unless the extra pixels on the 5d can be cropped sufficiently to compensate. But for now, I am trying to learn how to be patient, and that's hard for me :nailbiting:
 
There seems to be a price point that Canon don't have a camera for, between the 7/70D and the 5D3. I really hope they fill it with a high spec crop camera. Don't care if its 1.3 or 1.6 but no daft high MP sensor. 16-18 would be plenty. Good high ISO, 10 FPS and the 5D3 AF. I'd trade my MkIV for that.

I don't find the loss of the crop on the 5D that much of an issue. What I do like about the files is that they are easy to process. Even high ISO >2000 files only take a minimal amount of processing to finish them.

Here's the two images. Just a reminder, both cameras had the same lens attached, but obviously with a different field of view. I cropped the 6D image to match the field of view from the 60D, then resized down the 60D image to match the dimensions of the 6D image.

The first is from the 60D, downsized to match the image size of the cropped 6D image. All from RAW with no sharpening / noise reduction other than the Adobe defaults.

Nice comparison, definitely a lot less noise on the 2nd pic. :)
 
That's an interesting comparison especially from the noise handling. It would be good to see a similar comparison of a 7D v 5D mk3. Thanks for showing these.
