New crop camera needed

Morning folks,

Sadly my poor old 400D cropper is coming to the end of its life.

What are your views on the best crop camera to replace it with - I currently own the 5D2 and this would be a sort of back up and alternative for wildlife and sports.

I know the obvious answer would be the 7D but is this the only option - any views on 1D3, 60D, 550D.:shrug::shrug:

Any advice would be great as I am sort of out of touch with the crop cameras

I would also look at the 50D, as it fits between the 7D and the 60D, albeit a bit older. If you've got the cash 7D would be best bet.

After having owned a 1D series camera, I wouldn't have one as a back up, as they are quite heavy and I don't like to carry around too much extra weight. AF is amazing, but for wildlife and sports a 1.6x crop might be more useful.
 
Yep I thought the 7D would be best but was trying to save a few quid and assess other options. I thought 50D was long forgotten in peoples memory.

I have the 50D which I'm very happy with, but I reckon the 60D is probably worth the extra for much better noise handling at high ISO's. Ditto the 7D if you can stretch to it, which also offers better AF and more AF points..
 
For me it would be between 7D and 1D3. Both are cost similarly (1D obviously second hand). If you have enough "reach" and don't mind a bigger toy, get 1D, they are superb at AF and producing clean files even at high ISOs. 7D would be for the long range wildlife shooting, or where small form factor is favourable. I prefer 1D and currently own one.
 
I've owned a 350D, 40D then went to a 5D2 but at Focus at the begining of the year I ended up coming home with a factory refurb 1D3.

I'll never part with my 5D2 it's a superb camera but I have to say that although the 1D3 isn't the latest it still blows me away.

The AF is fast as heck, the output even at 10 Mpixels is superb, I love the larger body style. I've found no problems with High ISO noise. Having two card slots is great. It's just an all round superb camera.
However I can't comment on the 50, 60 or 7D having never owned one.

The only down side is the silly cost of batteries. I wanted a spare but genuine Canon ones are more expensive than the LP-E6 batteries used in the 5D2.

I paid £1500 for mine with a six month warranty and only 583 shots on the body. I did have to send it to Canon for remaping as there where too many hot pixels. That done it's bang on.
