New D7000or second hand D700?

Morning all,
With the price of the Nikon D7000 now down to where I can afford it I am thinking, should I get a new D7000 or wait a while and get a second hand D700? (my original plan was to get a second hand D7000 but with the price drop and cash back might as well get new).

Most of the time I use the camera as a general walk about, the only specific stuff I shoot is my son at his Judo competitions, I have used a D7000 at one of these and it was great but it was a very well lit hall at Sheffield EIS, I have not had the chance to use a D700 so have no real life comparison.

I just cannot decide if I would I be better with the D700's focusing and ISO performance or will the D7000 be ok, ahhh cant make my mind up!!!

I have some good lenses 24-70 f2.8 Nikon and 70-200 f2.8 sigma so for now I am happy with those.

Any educated opinions welcome
 
+1 for the D700. I've owned both of these bodies and, even though I really like the D7000, the D700 is hands down the better camera on the strength of its full frame sensor and additional controls.
 
Got both of those camera's, both great, but the d700 wins by a country mile especially coupled with the 24-70 you have
 
I'm going to go against the general consensus here and suggest you get the D7000.

The reason is simply because with the cashback it's an absolute steal. The camera is holding it's value very very well and as you can see on the classifieds, anyone trying to sell a D7K at the moment is quickly pulling it because they won't part with it around the price you can get a new one for.

So....

Since you say you'd need to keep saving for the D700, what I'd be tempted to do is get the D7000 and use it for now. See how you get on with it. It's still a very good camera and very useable to ISO3200 IMO. Continue to save for the D700.

If you later decide to go full frame then you're not going to lose a lot of money when you sell the D7000 but you will have enjoyed since it will be a significant upgrade from your current D70.
 
I like the thinking there gadgeteer and it would be a route I would consider but it has taken me 2 years to convince my better half that all black boxes with Nikon on the front are not all the same :bang:, so this is going to be a one time deal really, if I got one and a few month down the line said I wanted to change again, no matter what the residual value I am sure there would be 101 other uses for the cash LoL, I am only getting away with this time becuse I have finished decoration the lounge (only taken 4 years no rush eh!!).:D

See that's where you are going wrong.....

My OH didn't notice that my Tamron 70-200 f2.8 had magically turned into a Nikon 70-200 f2.8! The only issue I had was that my sister in law is an avid photographer and it was her dream lens. So she DEFINITELY noticed! But her silence was assured by a promise to lend it to her when she needed it.

Would your other half notice a swap from a D7000 to a D700? Or better still get the D7000 and then in a couple of years get a used D600. I bet she definitely won't notice the difference.

It would have to be 7000 to 700 , although she claims to take no notice she would soon say "I thought your camera had a 7 at the start" I could blag away on of the zeros but no chance with a six :shake:
 
I would probably say the best option is a good used d700 with warranty if possible. The d7000 new is a steal a present, even when the price of d7100 drops I can't see the d7000 going for much less than £500 second hand. No one is going to sell a great condition d7000 at present for £350-400, its too good a camera to let go of for that price and would be better to keep as a second body. I can see used d7000 prices jumping back up after the cash back offer finishes.

With the lens you have got the d700 would be perfect especially for landscapes, portraits etc. you may find the 70-200 a little short for wildlife unless you get really close.
 
tell your wife that when you start telling her what shoes and handbags to buy and complaining about her getting her hair done every week, then she can tell you what camera to buy.

OK. If the 7 is important then how about getting the D7000 through Amazon? Under the DSR rules you have 7 days to return it for any reason and I think I read somewhere here that Amazon let you have up to 30 days.

Don't get me wrong I lurve my D700 but the D7k is simply in my view the best value camera on the market at the moment. I cannot think of a single camera with more bang per buck.

The D700 was always hailed as a D3 in all but size only and having had a D3 and now a D7000 I can assure you that the D7000 isn't a match for the D3 - for me it's the one I take when I don't want to risk having the D3S with me ... a convenience camera.
I'm of the opinion that the only (recent) improvement over the D700 is the D800 but at around double the price of a 2nd hand D700 and with the widely discussed oil and AF issues in some it's a gamble.
 
Rob-Nikon's quite right. I was considering selling my mint D7000 with very low count along with an 18-70 lens, but to compete with the cashback I'd have to be asking £500 or less. I'll wait and see if, like Rob reckons, the prices move back again when the stocks have been shifted...:D

Either way I would had a far better camera than my D70 for the sort of photos I am trying to take. (Hopefully example below taken with a borrowed D7000).

I've got both. The D7000 is for backup. I've never used it in anger, only to make sure it still works.

There are no guarantees but I honestly think prices will recover. I've been watching eBay for used D7000's in case I can pick one up cheaply during cashback period and they are all still going for £500ish. Given you can with the cashback offer get one for around £528-£550 that's not a great loss.

Secondly look at other cameras in the Nikon/Canon/Sony range. Nothing comes close at around the £550 mark.

Thirdly as mentioned people on the classifieds are refusing to let their D7k's go for less than £500.

What are you waiting for! :clap: Whilst this is the female equivalent of "Go ahead...I dare you...", I'd have ordered the D7000 by now and be looking forward to a day or two of peace & quiet whilst she's not talking to me. :lol:

The D7000 will allow you to get any shot other cameras with better ISO noise handling can, it just won't be as clean!

Either way and whichever you choose, it will be a huge step up from your D70 (I see you like your 7's!) and you will enjoy your purchase.

I have a D7000 and I can't think of a time where I've said "I need my camera to do xxxxx to enable me to get that shot". It's pretty versatile and will serve you well for pretty much anything...

And at least it has a quiet mode :)

Either way, you won't lose that much on either purchase so buy now and if you don't like it, sell on here for a decent price :)

I don't agree the D7100 will be available for less than £900 before the summer which will drive the prices of used d7k's down, same as what happened with the d90 not long after the d7k launched.

It won't take long for D7K's to drop used to around £350-£400 max.

I just saw the d7000 at wex on my phone at dinner, so decided to upgrade from my d3100.

647, delivered tomorrow day. Selling old camera for 300 and 100 cash back, so its not to bad.
