New D90 owner lens advice..

I all,
I've just purchased a D90 and I'm debating selling my 35mm 1.8 DX lens and buying the 50mm 1.8. Now I know the 35 has the in built motor, but is that the only real difference (other than focal length)
I'm basically trying to re coupe some cash back as the 35 is £50 more on the 2nd hand Market.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

If it's just the focal length that is the difference? Is the crop on the sensor still the same on the D90?
 
Yes it is just the focal length that is different. You would have to get further back with the 50mm to get the same field of view you get with the 35mm. This might be a problem in eg. a small room.
If you have kit zoom lens you can just take pics at 35mm and 50mm from the same spot and compare.
Your sensor stays a DX sensor, so crop factor is not relevant here.

I'll have a go at that tonight. I don't have the kit lens, I have 16-85 but the same goes. I just did t know if the "nifty" was a better lens.
 
The lower the f# the fast and better DoF (in most cases) plus can be used in lower light.

If its the nikon 35mm f1.8 I'd keep it. Its a nice mm for viewing people. I have the 50mm f1.4d (around 200ukp new) and find that I need to keep moving back. the 28mm manual m42 lens usually gives me the width I'd like, but being manual requires a bit more time to focus ;)

Any particular reason you wanted to shift the lens?

The only reason for me to shift the lens is price really. The 35mm is about £130 and the 50mm is £80 so I'd generate some cash back. As I've just got a D90 and a fisheye.... Was just financial.

So ill keep the 35mm if it's just as good lens..
 
I used both these lenses last weekend at a gig. I have to say I preferred using the 35 to me it produced nicer results, although it might have been me. It seemed to focus better in low light too.

The difference in focal length to me was a few steps.

I'd keep the 35 if I was you and maybe buy the 50mm when you have the money :)

Thats great advice mate, thank you. I think I'll do just that and keep the 35mm have a bash with the new D90 and get to grips with all the functions of that before I swap the 35mm then.

I just wasn't sure if the 50mm was a better lens. But it appears not (or at least the same)

I suppose it comes down to preference really.

I wouldn't trade my 35mm in anyway, I'd add to it but not swap it! :D

I havnt tried the 50mm you see, but that's all I wanted to know! I'll just keep it :-)
 
I have a D90 with the 16-85 and 50mm, no other lenses. I don't use the 50mm much and find it a bit long sometimes, I only use it when I want more dof.

Yeah I do use the 6-85 90% of the time on my D40, so I'm guessing that I'd find 50mm too long also. That was my concern. The Dof shots on the 35mm are awesome!
Will you get shallow DoF like that from any lens similar to the 16-85?? Or will it be ££££

The max aperture of the 16-85 I think is f/3.5 up to around 24mm, I have been able to get some shots with shallow dof but you have to be quite close to the subject.

Maybe try a constant aperture zoom like a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8, think they go for around £300.

Yeah as soon as you zoom it goes to 5.6f. So yeah probably better of with a fixed f/2.8 with that. But I think I'll be ok with what I have for now.
