New Dilema, D7000 or D700?

Dear all, I recently had some great advice from you all with regards to either purchasing the D300 or D7000. I opted for the D7000. Which is on order but I haven't actually handed over the cash yet. So after lots of thought and discussion with various people I am now deciding upon if it is more beneficial for me to save for a bit longer and go for the D700 instead. I understand it has all the benefits of the D7000 and also full frame but I would have to invest in lenses that are compatible. Now this wouldn't be a problem as I would be keeping my current D3000 and the DX lenses. My ambition is to be a professional Wedding photographer along with portraits and hopefully other great things!. I know it sounds like I have already made my mind up but I have a doubt as people have said 'why spend that extra money when you will get great results with the D7000?' I know it is not only down to equipment but surely better glass and a better built camera is going to help me along the way? I have this one chance to invest so should I just go for it (even though I will only be able to afford the body at first!). please help a undecided person! thanks!
 
There is no comparison. Buy a D700. I've owned both and they are night and day.
 
The D700 doesn't have all the benefits of the D700. There is no video. For me not a problem.

Given the choice D700 each time.
 
thanks all, I don't want video anyway so thats not a problem. What other benefits am I missing on the D700? I have scoured the spec. I just need to hold my nerve spending that much money in one go!

Go for a well cared for used D700 .... they come up in Classifieds sometimes...
 
Don't forget the lens price on a D700 is much more than a D7000.

That's worth keeping in mind.
 
Also don't forget you can still use your FF lenses, when you get them, on the D7000, just with a different field of view.
 
I was told that the D700 wasn't compatible with my DX lenses. However I have just been doing a quick look and someone else says "Thank goodness, the D700 works with every Nikon lens made since 1977." so is it or isn't it? i'm feeling a tad confused with conflicting advice.

Ooh and they won't let me in classifieds yet!!!

They'll work fine but the camera will default to dx mode which will be about 6mp.

That is a term used because the mount is unchanged.

Your DX lenses will work on the D700 but you get a image size of 6MP as the camera takes out the part of the FF sensor not used by a DX type lens

That a mod set thing as my posts are known to be anti mac in computers. Macs are good raincoats that is all. overpriced ponsy fashion accessories really.:)

(Must admit to owning an Ipad for business use though):naughty:

Oh right!, steady!! mine is a hardworking type of mac not a fashion accessory! You gotta love them though.

I've had a glance over that thread thanks. Now I need to work out which single lens I could save up for....

Sold my first D700 to Dean, regretted it since, finally got another, such an amazing camera and currently extremely good value.

What do you photograph most and what is your budget?
 
At the moment Weddings and Portraits. I will have £300 approx for a lens, so I guess I will have to save up for the lens for a while longer.
 
Ideally you would be looking for Nikon 2.8 lenses

70 -200 VR £950 used for mark 1 model
Nikon 24 70 about £950 used or it's predecessor 28-70 at about £650
Sigma do a DG version (needed to work on the D700, but will be fine on D7000 from around £350 used but the non HSM version won't AF on your 3000

Then you might want 50 or 85mm primes 1.4 versions nice but 1.8 fine and a lot cheaper.
 
I've a D90 but am thinking of going full frame - and having DX lenses I'd need new ones for FX. So I decided to buy a lens first, then save up for the body. A couple of weeks ago I got a 24-70 f2.8 and its an excellent lens on my D90 and will mean I have a good lens if/when I do go full frame.
 
I've got a 50mm prime 1.8 already. gosh the price of those lenses makes my heart thump a bit!. lovely advice thanks very much for that.
i'm still in a bit of a muddle as I could afford the D7000 along with other kit such as a speedlight and also perhaps a bit of studio lighting too whilst I build my experience. I just didn't want to invest in something that I may quickly outgrow. But I am imagining the difference on a D700 would be amazing.
 
Tell me about it... it was scary buying the 24-70! I have a 50mm too but I knew I'd need more focal range than that on a D700 so I thought if I got the lens now, then even if I don't go FX I've got a great lens for using on the D90.

Its a case of balancing out what you need now, what direction you are heading in and how much you have to spend. As I'm using a 6yo 1GB laptop, my next purchase has to be a computer!

One thing the D700 is missing is a 2nd card slot. The D7000 has 2 slots which I find a benefit, either as an "overflow" system, or as an instant backup, writing to both cards simultaneously.
This to me is the only thing I can fault on the D700.
 
Right, that is a shame about the card slots but not the end of the world and if thats the only thing you can fault then I am properly impressed. It really is a balancing act but I just don't want to make a really expensive wrong decision.. or end up with a camera that I can't afford to use! o heck. thanks everyone lots of food for thought.
 
I only care for the 2nd slot now I have it on the 300S, I see it as lacking in my d700 as wells the quiet mode. However I will be going to two d700 bodies ASAP. Even the 2nd slot and quiet mode won't stop me and I love both of those features.

I survived this long without either feature and the d700 is amazing. Especially with the 24 1.4 but that's another thread :)

And it's still going strong. I did the same thing - sold my first one and regretted it.
 
If you work with primes, like I primarily do, you can have awesome IQ and save money. 50 1.8, 35 2 and 85 1.8.
 
The d700 would be the better camera for what you've suggested. But...it's a lot of money to spend and decent lenses are also a must if you want to go pro. Plus, if you are serious about professional work you should probably also invest in a 2nd body, just in case :)
