New fast lens

I have a question and need some advice?

I have a Nikon D80 and have been building up my kit for a few years now when I can afford to, I have a Nikon 50mm 1:8 G, Tokina 11-16 2.8, Nikon 18-200 3.5-5.6 and a Nikon 18-55 3.5-5.6 G kit lens. I intend on stepping up my camera body once I progress my skills so I try and buy lenses that will also work on full frame! The 50mm is a great wee lens and I love it for portrait work, the 11-16 is my landscape lens which also works well, the issue I am having is that my other two lenses are very slow when using them in dark situations and my shots are rubbish, I have a friends wedding coming up and want to really get some good shots all day inside and out, I was looking at a "universal" lens like a Nikon 24-70 2.8 but the price is way to high and I just can't afford it, what other fast lenses are there that would work on a D80 but also a full frame when I eventually upgrade? I think the only solution is to get something around the 2.8 mark so I can use it inside at night! As always any feedback is very much appreciated

A few full frame users, tend to have the 35mm 1.8 (FX version), the 50mm you have and the 85mm1.8g and they find it covers all their needs (If into wildlife you would need something longer than 85mm). This set up will be useful if you do decide to go FF. If you do want a zoom the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 is a good lens for the price, about £320 new and about £200 secondhand or the newer version with VC which is about £640 new with the current cashback offers.

If you weren't thinking of going to FX I'd suggest something like the Tamron 17-50 or Siggy 17-50, or if your feeling rich the Nikon 17-55 - all f2.8 and all very decent. Even though you intend to go FX I'd still say solve your lens problem for the system you have, not the one you may have.

One option for FX compatible would be the Tamron 28-75 f2.8, there are a couple of versions but all of them should work fine on the D80.
 
Thanks guys, my budget is around the £400 mark, I was actually having a look at the Nikon 17-55 2.8, I'm sure I read somewhere that is the equivalent of a 24-70 on a full frame? too many decisions to be honest but your feedback is appreciated
 
To work out the difference between your (DX) lens and Full Frame lenses multiply by 1.5 as this is the approx crop factor with Nikon. So a 17-55mm is a crop (DX) lens so multiply 17 x 1.5 = 25.5 and 55 x 1.5 = 82.5 so as you can see the range is close to the Full Frame equivalent of the 24-70mm lens.
 
Just on reading a few reviews of the 17-55 and it actually looks like quite an impressive bit of kit, just need to find a reasonable price for a second hand one now

But it won't work on full-frame. And if/when you do change, you'll need to revise all your lenses as they'll be very different on FF.

The first thing you need to do is decide on format and make you lens choices accordingly. Trying to buy lenses that work well on both a cropper and FF is a flawed concept - they will be seriously compromised on both.
