New flash - YN560-III?

I just don't have the £££ for a SB600/700/900, and I am not so worried about TTL at this stage (I will be using it for creative lighting, which should be manual anyway).

The other option would be the YN560-II, which looks to be the same apart from not having radio trigger (obviously the YN560-III would need an additional trigger unit). The question is whether I actually need radio trigger..... I would like to have something with off-camera capability, and I think it could be optically triggered (from the on-board flash on my d5100). The only thing is, presumably it's would need to be line-of-site, and the light from the on-board flash would also illuminate the subject, giving me less control.

What are your thoughts for a flash newby?
 
That looks interesting , I wonder whats next from them ? A flash with ttl wireless control would be a good next step , they build the triggers so can't see problem incorporating receiver into a flash .
 
You can't fault Yongnuo speedlights for the price. They're surprisingly well built and reliable. I bought three YN465's a while ago for a fraction of what it would have cost to buy 'branded' lights.

Would suggest getting a Yongnuo RF-603 trigger for on-camera. Again, works as advertised. Haven't had a misfire yet.

Wouldn't hesitate to buy a YN560-III if I were ever in need of more strobes. Don't see that being the case for a while though :(
 
I have the 560 II and its a good flash for the price, I paid £49, i also have a set of wireless triggers for it for £23. So lots of choices with setup.
 
i just got a yungnuo 468 II and think its great for the money
ive only had a jessops flash before and rarely use them so this seemed ideal
 
I've a couple of 460 II & a 560 and they've been dropped and knocked about a bit and sill firing well from the 602's.

Very good value.

Now I've said that they'll probably start failing!

Did you buy one?
 
I had 2 sb900 units and my old Yongnuo 560. Felt no need to keep 3, so I sold on one of the sb900s - the Yn-560 wasn't worth selling, and it does a great job. It does fire using the CLS along side the sb900 - no triggers needed :) I'm sure the newer versions are even better.
 
I've got a 560, can't fault it for the price. They've got a new one out now that supports high speed sync, I wouldn't mind giving one of them a whirl...
 
So flash has arrived. It's a goodun.

Stupid question - what are your thoughts on rechargeable batteries for flashes? I could be spending a fortune on batteries, that's all....

I have always used rechargeables in my flashes, it's a no brainer and thought everyone would just from a cost perspective.

I normally use eneloop type rechargeables, and have 3 or 4 brands, and have recently tried NiZn batteries as well, all work very well.

I believe Sanyo enelope rechargeables are meant to be the best. I usually buy the bulk packs of cheapie ones from the pound shop though and I've never had an issue with them! Depends how strong your flash is being used at
 
Using rechargeables in speedlights is an absolute no-brainer. Buy good low discharge ones - Eneloops are the most well known but several other manufacturers also produce batteries with the same technology on board.

Any decent brand is as good as any other, i have used Sanyo, Duracell, Panasonic and Uniross with equally good results.
