Hi Guys,

Got a Nikon D90 and i want to have ago at flash photography, and the built-in flash does not really give me the control i'm after.
can any of you recommend me a flashgun??

What sort of budget do you have in mind and do you want/need ttl or are you happy enough to set the power output of the flashgun manually?

What sort of budget? Sb900 is approx £320 and is a excellent flashgun, or a sb600 at approx £180 still a excellent flashgun just not got as many features

oh yeah forgot to mention budget max £200

i think auto is the way to go so dual control would be good

i can go manual control when i have more experience

A Nikon SB600 is the one to have then, should be just in budget. If you do your homework you might find a new one for a bit less and they hold their value really well,so should you decide to upgrade later on you'll get most (if not all) your money back when you sell it on

try to find another 20 notes and go a nice mint s/h SB800 - has all the controls and power you want. I found it a little top heavy on my D40 - just a tad smaller than your D90 - but you often find the SK power bracket dirt cheap on ebay - think mine was £30 - look out for one of these too.

thanks for the info chaps think i will read up some more on the SB600 and SB800
again thanks for the help

SB-600 is being replaced by the SB-700 (due in November). SB-800 has already been replaced by the SB-900 and is no longer available new.

The 700 & 900 have easier menu navigation and a rotary OFF/ON/REMOTE/MASTER switch. The 600 & 800 don't have the rotary switch but are slightly more powerful than their respective replacements.

Only the 600 is under £200 new - Kerso has them for £185 at the moment http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRAND-NEW-NIK...Cameras_DigitalCameras_JN&hash=item2eb06ebed4. Tim's 800 above has more whoomph though - the 800 is a very good unit, ultra reliable.
