Hi all,


I'm looking to spend some money (4K) in to new gear this is to last me a while(years)

My current camera is a 400D which ive used for Portrait work, Landscapes and am looking in to weddings now. Its come to a point where in low light the camera struggles as i like to capture as much natural light as possible or be at a stage not to rely on flash as much.

Also trying to be cheeky for a while and use 1 to 2 lens to shoot a whole wedding.

I have my heart set on a 5D MK3

Other gear I have

50mm 1.8
85mm 1.8
17-55 Kit lens - I know i can't use this with the MK3
Sigma 70-300 F4

600EX RT - Flash.


The 24-70 Tamron has been suggested to me due to that the Tamron has an extra 2-3 stops of stabilisation will make a very tangible difference to the ambient lighting conditions I can shoot in, especially when my hand are shaky with adrenalin. Instead of ISO 12800, I could can shoot something like ISO 1600 which would be ideal.

I agree with the 5D mk 111, I would add either a 24-70 or 24-105 (it can come bundled with the 24-105) maybe think about a 50mm f1.4/35mm f2 or even something wider that could double for large group shots and landscape.
 
5d3 is a cracking camera, but if you're serious about shooting weddings then you'll need backup of everything - cameras, flashguns, certain focal lengths - everything!

You'd be amazed how quick the budget goes if you spend half of it on just one camera

He could keep the 400D.
The 50mm 1.4 would be nice but stick with the 1,8 to save money.
24-70 would be nice, you could save a little/lot and get the Tamron version.

5D mkiii + 24-70 £2700 approx.

Could go for a cheaper flash. Unless you are going to add to 600 ex-rt in the future and want the wirless option

I think ill get the 24-70 Tamron + Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM as i'm loving the shots it can produce. As i said i want to try and get away with shooting with just 2x lens for a while so i can get a bit of income camera paid off and start building more gear + Extra body/Flash etc.

or what about a 70-200?

How does the MK3 compare so say a D3s as this is a low light beast etc?

why would you change system when you have full frame lenses and flash gun?

5D3 is a fantastic camera, I'd personally go for first party lenses for walk-about lenses. As tempting as the Sigma 35/1.4 and Tamron 24-70 with VC, they are the lenses you'll use the most, you will want a good reliable lens.

I would suggest a 70-200 F2.8 particularly for weddings. Couple this with a 24-70or 16-35 if you can stretch your budget and your 50 1.8.

Only challenge with this set up is the lack of a macro which would allow you to shoot wedding details (Rings, dress patterns etc).

Also suggest looking into a camera grip to give you additional battery power and portrait holding position.

I don't want to change over just a comparison which would be better for low light work (weddings) just using natural light. etc

Only tempted by Tamron due to having stabilisation where the canon one doesn't (see my open post) and the 35mm Sigma i might not bother with if i get the 24-70 as it will be covered.

So

At the moment
24-70 and 70-200mm in the wish list/shopping cart atm.

So just need another maybe for wider shots as below 16-35?

Just looking at the 24-70 2.8 Canon compared to the 24-70 Tamron 24-70 2.8.

is it really worth £400 more to get the Canon one?

Yes, IMO it is (assuming you mean the MKII).

Ive had two copies of the Tamron, both had VC issues (the main reason i got it) and the AF, while good, is not as fast or reliable as USM. So for weddings the Tamron is usable but the Canon will be more reliable.

Cheers Dave i shall see how far i can stretch. The stabilisation of the Tamron sold me really.

I also really wanted VC. It works well so if you really need it please dont let me put you off.
What i did find was on two copies of the lens (form different places) VC would just stop working and i had to remove the lens and re mount it.
I also found that with the first copy using the outer AF points would not be as anywhere near as sharp as the inner ones. The second copy was a bit better but the Canon had no issues with these AF points.
I also found that when i tried to shoot my son, by aiming at the eyes, most of the time i would get his ear or hairline in focus. I tried doing the normal focus tests, FoCal etc, and everything normally checked out fine, yet no matter what i tired i couldn't get his eyes in focus.

The second copy also caused my 5D to lock up a few times, as it lost communication with the lens. I just felt after two copies it wasn't worth the hassle.
I am over the moon with the Canon though, no regrets at all. AF is faster and more accurate, and ive surprised myself that i dont need VC/IS as much as i thought, and especially not with a 5DMKIII.

There has been talk over on dpreview about these faults, im not the only one, although i do think good copies can be found. A mate has one and he loves it so there are good copies out there.

Like i say, please dont let me put you off ;-)
 
Thanks again Dave i guess the buy once by right comes to mind here uh! But have a limited budget. & want to focus on Weddings/Portrait/Landscapes.

didn't plan on using the 70-200 for landscapes :)

You can't really go wrong with that set up. When you do start looking at a wider lens I have heard good things about the 17-40 f4 for Canon although I shoot Nikon and use the 16-35 f4. The 17-40 is a lot cheaper than the 16-35 2.8 and the extra stop of light lost shouldn't be a problem with the 5d mk3.

anyone used the BACS setup with Procamerashop? How safe is it?
