New Graphics?

Not sure where to put this???

Its time I looked at a new computer, looks like the graphics card (Nvidia 9400GT) is playing up. I run Windows XP, AMD Athalon 6000 dual core.

The problem I have is I like the results the graphics card gives on my HPw2216 monitor. Talking to my independent computer man round the corner, he is suggesting a XXXX??? with on board graphics chip . . . saying I will get as good a result?

Is he right, or should I stick out for a 'proper graphics card', even simply replace my 9400 which is still current!.

Obviously replace is the cheaper option, the computer was bought October 2009. Should I embrace the 'new ways' of Windows seven?

I have the same 'on board' issue with the sound card, but thats not for hear.

I know nothing about computers, I only press the buttons, I have no!!! interest in games, video, film down loads etc. Photography and music, thats it.

Well from a pure image quality perspective there should be no difference between an onboard output and a seperate cards output.

The biggest factor in display quality is the monitor itself and how you set that up. As long as you don't plan on doing anything graphically intensive onboard will be perfect for your needs.
 
Probably should be in the computer section but...

Photos and music - any current graphics card will do - you could replace your current card with anything from £23 up and it will do the job fine. If you're hankering after a new PC, one of the second gen Intel i3/i5/i7 is the way to go.

Music and PCs are best served by taking the digital to analogue out of the PC and connecting up an external DAC.

Windows 7 - yes definitely if you are currently on XP or Vista.

My little independent computer shop around the corner is giving me good advise then. I like my HP monitor, I will have to make sure there are drivers and a colour setup program to operate the monitor in windows seven?

As far as the hifi sound side goes, direct into a DAC is how I do it now. My computer shop knows this, so, provided I get that in the new set up all will be hunky dory:clap:

Hankering after a new computer? . . . no, but as the card is on the blink, and I was considering having some clean up work and networking set up on this computer . . . seems a no brainer to look seriously towards a move onto current technology?

Sorry chaps, a little more help? Would viewing viewing my 'Digital Pictures' via HDMI be any different from the VGA connection . . . better, worse or no different.

Worse.... assuming you have the output resolution set to the same as the monitors native resolution.
