I currently have a nikon p500 and have been offered a canon eos 300d with 18-55mm lens. remote control, extension tubes for macro work, circular polariser, 4GB CF card (stores over 1000 images at maximum resolution), battery, charger, all cables etc. and tripod stand

as you can guess I am new to all this and wondering which is best out of these 2 cameras

OP doesn't say it's free; it may be, but it just says he has been offered this kit (e.g could have been offered it for £300.)

I have been offered the canon for £150 before it goes on ebay, if I buy it i am likely to sell the p500:)

The 300d is getting a little old in the tooth now, however it was quite a capable little camera in its day.
Average price seems to be around £90 for body and kit lens, however, not knowing the quality of the accesories that come with it, it is difficult to say whether it is good value or not. You COULD get those offered for as little as £25, but as stated, no idea of quality.
Personally, for £150, I would set my sights a little higher than the 300d.
Maybe a 1000d or a 350d, both very capable cameras, then add accesories as and when you need/can afford them.
