I'm currently with FastHosts who were very good, but now I think they've grown to the size where they're too big to offer the same levels of service so I'm looking for a new hosting company.

I called 1and1.co.uk but they're part of the same company and so use the same suport desk. If push comes to shove I'll omve to them as they can offer me a CNAME but can anyone offer any recommendations?

Main requirements are:
- I need to be able to get a CNAME to redirect to Photoshelter.
- I'd like a UK based support centre as I'm hopeless with this kind of stuff.
- I simple but good web site building tool would be a bonus.

FI wouldn't hestitate to recommend Titan Internet. UK based, fast, small enough to care, big enough to get the job done. Stunning service.

However, they're not very generous with webspace - fine for most small businesses except photographers although you can negotiate a custom package.

You never get something for nothing, and rather than headline grabbing unlimited space, they provide great backup and service

Blimey, that was quick! Tahnks Andrew, I'm not fuss by webspace as I'm hosting images on Photoshelter, I just want someone to hold my domain names securely and who can help me with my many IT related problems.

www.linode.com however its a "black box" solution- so you manage the server yourself. But with ubuntu & apt-get now, its not difficult. Depends how hands on you want to get though :)

just seen your next post- you can probably ignore this idea.

register1 has a good name. I've not used them, but the guy who runs it is a pistonheads member and lots of people there use him and I've not seen any real complaints.

Knownhost - US based, but they bend over backwards to help and they've a range of hosting options.
I've tried loads over the years and none can hold a candle to these guys!

When I asked the same question a few months ago somebody recommended TsoHost. I have found them first rate and very helpfulhad and quick to reply to e-mails or make the adjustments required. They even replied to e-mails and made account adjustments at gone 11:00pm at night for me.

Going to mention these myself.

Come highly recommended on a PC forum I visit.

No idea what your budget is, but you will not find better hosts than Rackspace in terms of service, knowledge and support. They have literally built the entire company around an ethos of "Fanatical Support", a silly tagline, which is though, exactly what they provide.

They are one of the most expensive I have used, the only put off. Its a tough call.

What I would say, run as fast as you can from 1and1. They are what forced me to use Rackspace, after too many incidents where I ended up going round in circles looking for support, but only getting confused and unhelpful foreigners on the phone.

Good luck in your search, its a REALLY important decision.

Gary.

I should add, Rackspace have never failed to answer the phone within seconds, and it's always a trained Engineer who knows the systems inside out.

Gary.

Oh yea, we use rackspace at work. They are just awesome- really really good. Also, they offer vps's now- at really good prices- with their amazing support, so well worth a (free) phone call to them.

If you need someone who can just change your cname records etc... I could do that.. I have my own hosting service which I use for all my sites, I can give you full cpanel with fantastico etc and when it comes to support you can just ring me on my mobile number?

I dont have customers I just have the space and hosting for myself. If your interested just drop me a PM.

I looked at Streamline, then put streamline review into google and decided against them!

As its the only hosting company I have never had problems with, I had to throw it in the mix. For me, they have been really good, I have only ever had to call them on set up to clarify a few things I can't comment on there Tech Support because I have never had to use it.

If folk are saying "Hosting Company A" tech support is excellent, I would question why you need to call support in the first place. Obviously they have had problems, otherwise why call support?

I call rackspace for support in installing server based software, understanding web logs, working out how to get SQL and .NET talking etc. I have not had to call for any "issues", just "requirements" - and they are always happy to do it for me.

Streamline are the worse hosting company I have ever ever dealt with. You don't just use support for when they have problems- you might want something changed on the server, or adding additional services etc etc. Streamline did not refund me, even though they have a 99.99% uptime guarantee (or used to)- when their mysql server was down for 4 days. What a joke- avoid at all costs.

Thanks all for your help with this. In a way it's almost too much to take in, but I'll have to have a look online and see what's waht based on all your experiences.
