Hey all
Im looking to get the sigma 10-24mm ultra wide angle before my trip to the lake district but need to raise some money towards it so I was thinking of putting my 18-105mm lens that I got with my D90 up for sale, I was just wondering if this is a good idea as would'nt it be surplus to requirements if I got the sigma ? Or would it still come in handy ?
Thanks alot
Joe

I'd definitely hang on to the 18-105, it is a great combo with the D90. You would almost certainly find the 10-20mm too limiting, you may not like how it pushes those hills and valleys into the distance! Plus it has that useful VR which is a bonus in low light. It's a great all-rounder, for what you'd get for it it's really not worth getting rid of.

Ok cheers jpw
So you dont think the 10-20mm would be very good for landscapes ? What would you suggest for big scenic shots in the lakes ?

If I was to get a ultra wide angle lens, then the only one I would even consider getting is the Tokina ATX 116 PRO DX AF11-16mm F/2.8 way better than any of the other offerings

As for the 18-105mm lens, comes in very handy as a walkaround lens, has got a very usable focal range.... if you like it keep it.

Oh, I'm not saying that it wouldn't be very good - it is, for some kinds of landscapes (I have one and use it a lot) but there will be occasions where you'll want to pull those distant vistas closer, and the 10-20 will just push them away and make them appear smaller. It makes close things appear closer, and far things appear further away (and smaller). I just think a range of focal lengths to call on would be worth having, and the 18-105 will give you that.

Oh ok thanks JPW looks like i'll keep it then just gotta find the money now for the wide angle
The sentence that Ive highlighted above by the way, is that because its a ultra wide angle ? would a normal wide angle make things not seem so far way and smaller ?

By the way Ive read in my magazine the reviews for a select few ultra wide angles but then theres a section for ultra wide angles for full frame cameras, can someone tell me the diffenece between full frame and normal ? Is my D90 a full frame ?

No your D90 is a cropped sensor camera. There is a 1.5x magnification factor to work with. So your 50mm lens is still a 50mm lens (that doesn't change), but it frames like a 75mm lens (50mm x 1.5 = 75) because the sensor in your camera is smaller than the full frame sensor on say the Nikon D700.

Yes, the shorter the focal length the bigger the effect, with a regular wide angle it's less pronounced. I'd still recommend you get one, the 10-20 range is a useful one to have on a DX sensor.
