Hi read through some other threads but this was just confusing me,I'm getting a 40d ungrade from the 400d I have now, hopefully have a around £300 for new lens would like 24-105mm, but just out my range, so what choice does this leave me, want something in this range as doing alot of studio work, what do you reccommend.

I got the EF-S 17-85 'with' my 40D and it's come down a fair bit in price now.

I tend to use it quite a lot and think it's good value.
 
Hi I bought the 400d as body only have the 18-55mm off my old 350 but its a bit soft, have a sigma 70-300 which I use for sports, this is just a little to long in the studio
 
I would go for the 17-85. I had one, great lens. You can pick them up for about £200 secondhand. Leave you some money for a flash or something.
 
17-85, got one. Dont like it. It's too soft and has too much distortion. Read the reviews (wish I had).

2nd for the 28-135mm f3.5 -f5.6 IS USM, Wonderful lens. Nice and sharp on a tripod (Remember to turn IS off when using tripod!) and seems to produce good images from 28mm right through to 135mm.

28-135 is the same animal as 17-85. If you look at it the equiv. focal length matches, both have similar aperture range, similar IS implementation and similar softness. On Aps-C 28-135 might fare a wee bit better, but I would not want to stick it on a 5D. Also 28mm is limiting on 40D, 24mm is just about OK.

If you want it really cheap I'd find 24-85mm 3.5-4.5 USM (good on APS-C, not so good on FF but cheap 2nd hand).

If you can afford to pay around £200, then just get Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 (VC version is coming out shortly), Tokina 16-50mm f/2.8 is excellent, sigma 18-50 f/2.8 is not as good but acceptable.

I don't think canon has anything good and affordable at that price. I ended up with 24-70mm, way over the initial budget.
 
Thanks again for all the replies choice is getting bigger,simply can't afford a 24-105mm so thats put pay to that, looking at the choices how bad is the 17-85mm is,want to keep this lens for a while. found 17-85mm for around the £250-£300 mark.
This doesn't have to be a canon lens just want the best I can buy.

I had the Canon 17-85 for a year but I strongly suggest you read the reviews about it.
It does have it's issues but this depends on the focal length.
If you look around you will be able to pick one up for under £200.
I certainly wouldn't buy a new one.
Another option for a good walk about lens but it will cost you around £450 new, is the Tamron 18-270mm VC.
A lot of people would argue about how good a lens with such a long zoom range can be but imo, the review in photoplus magazine was spot on and I replaced the canon 17-85 with one.
 
if you are doing studio stuff what about a prime (50mm 1.4 ?) or 50mm 1.8 and 85mm ?

A friend does almost all his photography with a 100m f2.8 macro lens, I think thats just under budget..
 
hmm well Im a bit off your budget..

50 1.4 is about £280
50 1.8 is about £80, but the 85mm 1.8 is £300 on its own, so break the budget as a pair..

the 100 macro is £425 ! maybe a s/h one ?
