New lens for landscape (Canon 30D)

As I am getting more and more serious about photography, I'm thinking it's about time I got a proper lens for the bulk of what I shoot. I seem to generally shoot at either 21-24mm or about 55-60mm. I was thinking of the Canon 15-85mm 3.5-4.5 IS lens, but would listen to any other recommendations. My local camera shop does 12 months interest free credit, so as long as it's not thousands of pounds, the cost doesn't bother me greatly, as I can pay monthly!

I have had this lens about two weeks now and the more I use it the more I am impressed. I used to have the Tokina 12-24 F4 and a Sigma 18-50mm F2.8. I changed both these for this lens. I have to admit though that I have not taken any landscape with it yet. The zoom range for me is great. I bought it as I wanted to try and get away with one lens where possible.
 
another one to look at is the 17-55mm EFS, this will cover alot of your focal range but give you that little bit wider if you need ot for the landscapes.

I'd consider the Tokina range too, they do some extreme wides 11-16mm, and 12-24 and no distortion.

I bought one of these last year for my wife but I think I've used it more as she's usually chasing butterflys with a 150mm macro.

I think it's a very good general purpose lens, fairly compact, said to be a little heavy but I think it balances well on her 30D and my 7D. As a walkabout lens on a crop I don't think you can do much better. Many people would choose faster glass over its' obviously useful range such as the Canon 17-55f2.8IS but that's an arguement all of its own.
Personally I think if you can afford it and don't need f2.8 then go for it.
 
I don't think there would be a lot of benefit for me going down to f2.8 would there? I'm thinking it's going to be a lot better and easier for me if I can just have 1 lens attached to the camera most of the time, as I take most of my pictures when hiking up bloody big hills! I understand the lens is slightly heavy, but not as heavy as taking 3 different lens to do the same job as this one is capable of!

I do want the IQ to be good though, especially for £600! I was also looking at the 17-40 but I've seen a lot of people say it's not as good on a crop body and about 30% of my landscape shots are between 40 and 80mm, it wouldn't solve as many problems as the 15-85.
