hiya

am thinking about getting a new lens - what do you guys think would be a good move?

i current shoot with a nikon d300 and use a nikon 200 f5.6 zoom and tamron 28-75 f2.8 (which i love).

i am being 2nd photographer at a wedding soon (snapping guests as they arrive to the reception) and am trying to fit in some band and portrait photos soon.

budget is limited, prob to £200 max, but 2nd hand no probs

nifty fifty?

I've got the 50mm f/1.8 which has excellent DoF.

However, the crop factor makes this unusable for me. I am trading in for a 35mm f/1.8.

You can pick them up new for £160, so within your budget.

sounds interesting. how does the cropping affect you? what do you mainly take pics of? would be good to avoid something that annoys me!

thanks.

Cropping is x1.6, so the 35mm is 56mm & the 50mm is 80mm.

I've used the lens for pictures of my daughter, a wedding and some street photography. Each time I've used it in one of those areas I've had to walk back quite a few steps to get the picture I actually want.

I think I use my fifty less for the same reasons as BarryG - was also thinking of a 35mm instead.

If you buy from a store take your camera down and have a go first to find out what you prefer.

I went the opposite way, from a 35mm to the 50mm as I always found I needed to be too close the subject with a 35mm. Each to their own and all that. Try them both.
