Hi all, my OH bought me a tamron 55 - 200mm lens for my 400d for Christmas, it seems great but he took it out yesterday and it threw up some error messages. It could be user error as he isn't au fait with dslrs but I just sent him off with the auto setting on. I've tried to google if the lens is fully compatible with my camera but it's quite confusing re sensor sizes etc. do any of you know if it's ok? I hope so because I've tried it now so it can't be returned.

Hi Anna, that lens should be fully compatible with all canon DSLRs so no problems using it on your 400D.
Sounds like it has a fault so if it was bought new then it would be covered under warranty.
I take it you've never had the error message with any other lens?
Do you have access to another body you could try it on?
What does the error message say exactly?
It may be worth gently rubbing the AF contacts with a pencil eraser or a lens pen just in case they're dirty though as it's new I'd be surprised if that was the case.
Very annoying. :(

As long as the lens is rated for Canon then it should be compatable.
We need the FULL description of the lens (name/number/letters) to give an opinion.
Depending on where you bought it from, if it is faulty, then trying it makes no difference, how would you know it is faulty otherwise?
Try carefully cleaning the 7 contacts at the small end of the lens and also inside the camera lens mount. The lens contacts could have some protecting gunk on them.

Try cleaning the contacts on YOUR camera, ok the new lens should be clean but if yours are dirty it could cause the same effect.

Like said if new then it should be returned and sorted.

Thanks for your reply, I have recently tried my MILs older sigma lenses on my camera but unfortunately they were not chipped correctly to be compatible and sent up errors. I've stopped using them and returned them so I now just have my kit lens and my new tamron. I'm not sure which error came up as my husband just said an error came up and he switched it off and on and it then worked. I will clean the points as you suggest and hopefully that will sort it!

It's always handy having your approximate location displayed Anna, guaranteed there'll be another member near you willing to test the lens on his/her body. ;)

It's the Di II tamron AF 55-200mm 1:4-5.6 macro lens.
I have a friend with a canon so will ask him if he can test it for me!
Thanks for all the replies :-)

If you want my honest opinion, send it back and buy the Canon 55-250mm IS lens. Much better in almost everyone's opinion, and about the same pricewise.
Try a search on the forum to find out just how high it is regarded.

I actually wanted a canon 50mm 1.8 and a canon 55-250mm but my oh found this when shopping and got a good deal. I don't want to offend him and it's fine for my skill level at present. I will get these canon lenses eventually and don't want my oh to know its not perfect! We are a bit strapped at the mo as I'm not working as pregnant and we have a 2 yr old so photography not a priority at the mo! I just want it to work!

Appreciate all that Anna, on a pension myself. All the more reason to get something that works, and works better!

He he it's brand new so should work! Will have a word with oh later, :-)

Hi Anna

If it's brand new, then yes it should work straight away, out the box. Would not have expected your camera to throw an error message. If it does it again, what is the error code - can sometimes help determin the problem...

If it is throwing an error message again, having checked your contacts etc, I'd be returning it for a new one.

Hope you get it sorted...

Thanks, it's not done it with me yet so if it happens again I will let you know! :-)

maybe say its safest to take it back, tell the store given the errors youve lost confidence in its full compatability and exchange for equivalent alternative (canon ;))? everyone happy!

if its only done it the once and its okay with you , then maybe there was another cause that your O/H didnt spot (like sometimes very low battery can cause err99, or maybe he didnt have the lens fully engaged etc)

I'd suggest that you give it a good test yourself , and if you get errs then it goes back , but if not don't worry about it.
