New Lens Help!!

Hi Guys,

I'm am looking at getting a new lens for close ups and somnething that has a bit of zoom more than the bog stand 18-55mm lens that came with the camera. i have found the 2 lens which are practially the same bar one has STM and the other doesnt is the STM mainly for video etc. the 2 lens are

Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens
Canon EF-S 18-135 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens

The main difference between the STM and the IS is the STM is designed to AF silently while videoing with a 650D, which is the only body with STM capabilities at the moment I think. They can be used as normal stills lenses though and the 18-135 STM is sharper than the non STM version but it is a lot more expensive and mostly only comes with a body kit.

The 18-135 IS is the only EF-S lens I still have, although its usually the wife who uses it on her 650D, but you can get some good results of it as a general walkabout lens and is well worth the £175 I paid for it second hand.

I've not used the 18-200 IS, but sadly the reviews are not stellar for this lens. It seems to suffer from excessive pincushioning, heavy vignetting and extreme CA. There's a review here http://www.photozone.de/reviews/400-canon_18200_3556is

The best superzoom lens I've seen recently is the Tamron 18-270 VC PZD, which does seem to give some very good results. I borrowed a friends camera and lens a couple of weeks ago and got some pretty good photos from it, especially between 24mm and 250mm but all superzooms do lose some IQ to get the range. I had a Tamron 28-300 VC at one point and got some good results with it too and I only sold it when I got a Canon 100-400 L for the extra reach.

Many thanks fr such a quick reply sorry now hasn't been as quick I've been away and not had a chance to get on here. Okey dokey sounds like it would be worth me going for the canon efs 18-135 for quality really think I might save up a bit longer and go for the canon 100-400l like u said as it does have that extra reach which will be handy for events like goodwood festival of speed and my cricket matches at home. But for on the good the 18-135 would be best I'm guessing as its pretty good from close up and has a gd zoom is well. Would this lens be good at night events do you know. As the lens I have at the mo I seem to struggle at night.

i would likelast few reviews and maybe some pictures of people that use this lens if this is ok i think with what i use my camera for is sport aka crickt, football and motorsport i think the tamron 28-300 vc would be best what are theses lens like also for cropping etc
