Yes
It was my birthday on Thursday and I broke my own cardinal rule of one decent piece of glass per year.
Bought the 24-70mm that I'd been lusting after for some time.
Now i've still not really got to grips with the 105mm VR I bought in the Summer, and now this comes along to divert my attention, but......
All I can say is wow, what a beast. Its mahoosive! Build quality is fantastic. Combination of this and the D300 seems to give me super low-light capability, and it covers the focal length I use most these days.
First shots over on this thread:

Congrats on your new baby Darren. Must admit, this lens is on my radar too along with a 14-24 and a D700 to put them on! Just don't tell the wife.......

That thing is hardly ever off my D700, its soooo flexible

I've been lusting after the 105mm VR for a few months now. If you had to choose between the 2 which would you go for? I would be using it mostly in daylight conditions for weddings...

24-70mm all the way...

Oh yes, lovely lens 24-70  !!!

I had had the 105 for over a year before I broke out of the "its a macro lens" thing.......

Got to say, the 24-70, more flexible. Even though the 105 is great and it has VR, the 24-70 has that flexibilty as far as the focal length is concerned.

To be honest, its the best lens I've had the pleasure to shoot with.
The D300 and this combined are on another level, super-quick AF, nicely balanced in the hand, clarity, sharpness, gathers light like you wouldnt believe....

If I had to keep only one lens, this would be it.

Hmmm definitely the 24-70, I really do like to 105vr but the fixed focal length is not as flexible. The quality is similar though.

Excellent lens. My main lens for 'people' shooting on the D3. Not likely to ever sell mine. Unlike the 14-24mm which I hardly use...

Kev.

congrats on the lens - it is fantastic.

I got mine in a 'bundle' with a secondhand d700, and was fully planning on selling off the lens since the seller would not 'split'. a day's shooting later, was pretty sure it's not gonna happen - i think this one's staying :)

Sorry Darren, I don't want to detract from what appears to be a superb zoom , and you have produced some lovely pictures with it (the Brighton set). I just wonder whether the advantage of zoom is worth it, when one can get longer and significantly faster with good full-frame primes for less money...

It does look like a huge lens, and weighs in at almost a kilo. Wow.

I get very excited at the thought of a 24-70 - sadly too much money though!! Think that would be the perfect match for my D300, as I dont use the wide end of my 17-55 2.8 that much and could do with the extra length!!!

Don't underestimate the flexibility of a zoom at weddings.

Aye, true that lot is less money, but as pointed out, you'd have to change lenses and when you went out you'd be carrying that lot to cover the focal length of the 24-70.

You could, of course, move forwards or backwards yourself a bit to adjust -however if you have the 24mm on and wanted to get up to 70mm, then you may not be able to get close enough yourself and you could miss the shot....

is the 35mm f2 you listed superior to the cheaper 35mm f1.8 which is £199 ?

sorry to go off topic a bit.

i have the 35mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8 and 18-105mm kit lens. i'm seriously tempted to punt the lot for the above lens.
it would fit right in between my 10-24mm and 70-300vr

I've been dreaming of getting one of these lenses for quite a while after hearing rave reviews about it from all corners. Affordability has stopped me realistically looking in to getting one but at the weekend I had a chance to stick one on my D300 at a trade fair and I wacked the iso up to 1600 the aperture to f2.8 and snapped away indoors in reasonable lighting but nothing great and I was fairly disappointed in the results. The shutter speed was still down to about 1/30th which is a bit slow for me to get away with hand holding. On a D300 I'd be reluctant to up the iso any higher than that so I don't know how I'd be able to use the lens indoors without using flash. I admit the AF was impressively fast and the build quality superb but I'm now questioning whether I should still be considering this lens.

Isn't that why you have a 50/1.4 for conditions where its really really dark?

You're right and I don't want to get rid of my 50mm f1.4 but it wasn't really really dark. It was what you'd call normal indoor light conditions with the lights on. Not outdoor sunny conditions but certainly not really really dark.

Sometimes the 50mm isn't wide enough for what I want to do indoors and I don't want to have to use the flash all the time so I was hoping a 24-70mm would do the trick but it seems it won't.

Just get yourself a D700 my friend. Then it all turns out fine:D

That would be great if I had a bottomless money pit.

£1,000 to upgrade my D300 to a D700
£1,000 to upgrade my 70-200mm to the new MkII version
£1,000 for the 24-70mm which I'd be able to use fine indoors with the D700's better low light performance.

£3,000 spent so I can use my £200 lens. Don't ya just love photography? ;)
