new lens options (very confused)

hey peeps i have a 85mm 1.8 for my canon 600d but noticed that the macnifaction is waaay to much si have decided to look at the following 2 lens but can not make my mind up plz help me

tamron 28-75 mm 2.8

or

sigma 24-70mm 2.8
 
what sortof pics are you planning to take???? different shots would benefit from different lenses...... from the 2 mentionned there'd be minimal difference, sigma fractionally wider view and tamron fractional extra reach but relatively similar to be honest....

With a prime lens, you are the focus length, so you move away from or closer to the subject to compose the and take the shot you want. It makes you think more about the shot and how to compose images, or you can be lazy and buy a zoom.

The canon 85mm f1.8 a great lens, not only ideal for portrait / studio work, but its also a great lens for close up action shots because of the fast auto focusing of the lens.

As for the lenses, sigma 24-70 over the tamron, but the best in that range is the canon 24-70mm f2.8 knocks socks off the rest, but is the more expensive lens
 
mainly will be used for portaits at weddings etc and close ups which the prime cant really get close to subjects the sigma is so expensive compared to the tamron and was wondering if there is anything majorly different with the 2

Close ups? You mean macro close?
 
You might be better off with a wider lens, the cheaper options for that are things like the tamron 17-50/2.8, sigma 17-70 and canon 15-85. All of these go from moderate wide angle to normal length and 2 go on to short telephoto...

Your prime lens has a longer focal length than either of the zooms you've suggested so from the same distance away it will get you closer to the subjects.

There are overseas posters here and indeed posters from the UK who don't have English as their first language. Personally I think it's best to avoid needless grammar and spelling criticisms. As long as the meaning is clear it really shouldn't matter, IMVHO.

OP. The best option would be to call into a camera store and give a couple of lenses a try. A 17-50mm f2.8 and a 24 or 28-70mm f2.8 might be good starting points and you could add a 50mm f1.4 to your list of possible purchases too.

PS. Maybe take a look at a 70-200mm f2.8 too.

Yep confirmed with my wife who is Scottish that Scotch is booze, not a people ;)

As to the OPs question, 85mm on a crop can be pretty long - I have the Tamron and its okay full frame, but again might be a bit long.

I used to own the Sigma 17-70 and it was a superb lens but had to ditch it when I went full frame, but on your crop it would be great.
 
hmmmm okay i think the best option for me would be to try both of them in store. At the moment i am more in favour of the tamron.

P.S As for mr jackwow i assure you there is nothing wrong with my english, but typing from your iphone when on the train can create a few errors from time to time.
 
I had the Tamron for a few years decent lens for the price heard more positives than the Siggy

Okay, I'm not a Canon shooter but I used to have the Sigma 24-70/2.8 and was never entirely happy with it as far as sharpness went. Replaced it with the Tamron 28-75/2.8 which quickly became my first choice lens for portraits, christenings and weddings. No, it's not as good as the Nikon but in a blind test you'd guess wrong just as often as right :)
