Hello,

I have a Canon kit lens 18-55mm, but I want to get a bigger zoom lens like,
Tamron 18-270mm or Canon 55-250mm.

Is it better to have an all in one zoom, like the Tamron 18-270mm or an additional zoom to my 18-55mm, like the Canon 55-250mm?

Having one lens is obviously more convenient.....Im not sure if the quality is reduced with a huge zoom range like 18-270mm.

I really should have just bought my camera without the kit lens!

Any suggestions/recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Generally speaking, the larger the range, the bigger the compromise, and the lower the image quality at the end. For that reason, I'm not a big fan of 18-200 type zooms (although they have their place, and some people swear by them). Thinking of it the other way, prime lenses give the best image quality, but at the expense of convenience,

If you don't mind changing lenses, the Canon 55-250 is a great lens for the price, and compliments your kit lens nicely too. Or for a bit more you can get the 70-300 IS USM, which I had and loved.

Or there are 70-300s from Sigma and Tamron that are worth a look as well!

yes, its generally known that the longer the focal range the bigger the compromise in image quality, i would recommend the canon 55-250mm as i hear rave reviews about it especially as its quite cheap.

I hear there's a used one going in the sale/trade :whistling:

Seriously, big range zooms are a compromise, I had one and learnt that too. Either of the Canon IS Zooms mentioned are great to start with

If you only want to use one lens, there's no point in using two, which soon becomes three, then everything gets so heavy you never take anything anywhere - the Tamron gets probably the best reviews of all the superzooms at the moment. Get yourself to a shop and try one I'd say.... better having your camera and superzoom with you than the camera sitting at home all time...

I think a lot depends on your kind of photography, the single lens solution works especially well when you actually have the kit lens as well because it provides a compact limited range option when you know you won't need the full range. In other word I don't consider your kit lens a bad buy if you get a superzoom.

I agree that there will probably a quality (and handling) compromise as well as a reduced max aperture at the tele end with the 18-270.

Lots of my clients use the 55-250 which impresses me with it's image quality but the build is a bit of a shocker, still if you treat it carefully...

My choice - go for the 55-250 if you really need the longer focal lengths.

Thanks for the replies!,

sounds like the Canon 55-250mm would be a good choice.

The 55-250 is a great stable mate for the 18-55! The real bonus is that the 55-250 is extremely good value for money.
