Hey everyone I'm looking for a new lens. I have the 18 - 105 vr kit lens for my Nikon D90 but I now want to get another because I want to branch out in my photography. I'm not that clued up about lenses so I'm wondering if anyone can offer advice on what the next logical lens (some rough prices if possible too) would be for experimenting and moving on in my photography.

As much as possible, i know that doesn't really help but i dont just wont to do one type of photography i still wont to explore as i have't yet found my type.
 
Look through your current photos and look at the info as to what focal length was used. Most people usually have a length they use the most, even if they dont realise it.

You can then eithier A) get a better quality lens that incorporates that focal length, or B) Buy something outside of that length and challenge yourself to go outside your comfort zone.

You might find you use 50mm a lot, in which case we could reccomened a 50mm f/1.8, or you might think, I use 50mm a lot but want to be more creative, so we could reccomended a 100mm macro lens.

Not one of us can tell you what to buy with such a broad range of choice available, we need a bit more info on what you currently shoot the most, what you'd like to shoot more of and how much you want to spend.
 
I'd suggest a wide aperture, macro or wide angle but it really does depend upon what interests you.

You could use a wide aperture lens for low available light shots and narrow depth of field, you could use a macro for insect or flower shots and you could use a wide angle lens for creative and dramatic effect.

Why not do some Googling and see if any shots or subject matter make you go "WoW!" and if any do that might give you some idea what you'd like to buy and achieve with your photography.
 
i just had a look at my info on my pictures and found that i use every mm that is offered. i will just put some of my favorite pictures up with info that mite help
This was taken at 66mm
This was taken at 24mm
The majority of these photo's taken in this picture were 60mm to a 100mm

Wow, that last pic is interesting, very nice idea.
It seems to me you are very creative and have an eye for pictures that are a bit different, so maybe a good low light lens would help you create some nice pictures with depth of field.
I'd recomned the Nikon 50mm f/1.8. Its between £70-100 new, so pretty cheap.
Or you could spend a bit more and get a f/1.4 version at around £250-300 used

i agree with what tom has reccomended there are no hard and fast rules just go and try.
could you not borrow a lens fron any of any of your friends before you buy
 
105mm nikon (approx 400ukp) for macro
or go really wide - tokina 11-16mm
You might find a bit missing tho, so a f1.4-f2.8 in the range of 20-35mm might be good.
And for a zoom, 50-500 sigma or tokina 80-400..?
Longer macro perhaps the sigma 180mm...?

Most lenses around the 400 except the bigma, usually around 800 second hand.

If you want to see some shots, have a browse through the flickr link, 50mm f1.4 tonkina and some macros in there.
