My wife is buying me a new lens as a late birthday present so i've decided to get something to replace my tamron 70-300.
Weight is not a factor to me as i find it easy enough to adjust to the weight of anything i use.
As i'm going to see some seals (hopefully) next weekend i thought maybe the sigma 150-500 as i would also like to do some more nature/sport stuff as well at some point.
I had a chat with a very helpful guy at WE yesterday and he said it may be worth considering getting the 70-300G for the weight/size and that cropping could get similar results.
I tried the 200-500 on a camera and i was quite impressed though the zoom will take a little getting used to but thats a niggle and not an issue as such.
The budget i have is around £800 but could be pushed to £1000 should the right lens be available.
Your input would be very welcome.
 
Free bump :) Not many that many Sony users about, but somebody must have some advice for you.
 
I've used the Sigma 150-500mm on both the Canon 450D and 550D. It's a great lens with excelent image quality and an image stabilisation system that has to be seen to be believed. One guy on the Infernal Net that I came across likened the IS to witchcraft - I have no problem with this.

It weighs two kilos (two bags of sugar) but from the sound of it that won't be a problem for you.
 
Typo!....it was actually the 150-500 that i tried on the their display 580 mounted on a monopod.To me the focus didn't seem bad though i have read it is better on the newer sony ranges a33,a33,a550 and so on.
I expect you would notice focus speed more if you were used to faster focussing lenses.
 
In an ideal world i'd like the 70-400G but realistically i've narrowed it down to either the Sigma 150-500 or the Tamron 200-500.
 
I have the Sigma in Canon fit & I'm pretty happy with it.

It's great value, the compromise being that you need reasonable light for it to produce the goods easily. As Alex said, the OS is very impressive & I've managed to use 1/30 @ 500mm, but ideally it needs stopping down & the shutter speed keeping up.

My copy is somewhat soft wide open but takes a big leap @ 7.1 & then smaller steps in improvement as you stop down.

When I was looking at prices I noticed the Sony fit was cheaper than the others.
 
As you said, the 70-400G would be a fantastic upgrade, certainly the best lens of the various telephoto zooms.

The 70-300G is good (I have one, and am very happy with it), but do sometime wish it was longer, and will get the 70-400G when funds allow.

I've not tried the Sigma long zooms, but they look to get fairly good reviews on Dyxum (but only a few reviews each, so not necessarily a reliable guide)
 
Have a look on the Dyxum forums http://www.dyxum.com for reviews and example images for the intended lens you intend to buy. £800-£1000 is a lot of money to invest in one lens so I would think long and hard before you buy. A aperture of f5-6.3 is not ideal for what you want to shoot.
 
That's a nice shot Ken and looks sharp enough.I also like to do the zoos and parks etc and there are a couple or so air displays/events each year so the lens would get used.
I guess i'm looking for the perfect lens to do everything lol but i would be more than happy if it would do the zoos and local park and woodland as there are plenty of places here it could get used.
