obviously its a macro lens ( opinions please )

but i have read somewhere that macro lenses can be used for portraits is this one suitable for that

The majority of true prime macro lenses are 60-100mm. The reason people say they can/do use them as portrait lenses is because of that focal length.

Personally 30mm is too wide as a portrait lens.

How about the 50mm f/1.8? I've heard the Sony variant is a good lens, and it's a great focal length on a crop sensor for those types of uses.

i have the minolta 50mm f1.7 and it's a great little lens. £80 should get a decent example with arguably better build quality than the sony. the new sony lenses feel too 'plastic' for my liking if i'm honest, although the 85mm would be a good length

The 50mm is a great focal length by the way, I use my minolta 50mm f1.7 all the time, literally it's the only lens I own now and I love the simplicity of only taking one camera and lens
