Hi all, im a newbie here so please be gentle. I have just got myself a sony a380 with standard lens and wish to get a new lens for it. As i said i am a newbie and dont know that much about lenses and there are so many about.
I will be using the camera mainly for motorsport, trackdays etc and would like a budget lens for this purpose. Does anyone have any ideas

Depending upon distance to the subject and lighting I'd have thought a longish fastish lens would be your best option. 70-200mm f2.8? Difficult on a budget... I found a Sigma for a shade over £600... maybe a used one could be found for less... Failing that a 70-200 or 70-300mm of standard aperture can be had for anything from £60 to over £600.
 
OT: it's both by the way. lens is the original Queen's English for lens with the invention of spectacles (or so I understand it, but what do I know?) but it fell out of favour many moons ago and the "e" was dropped. Much like people now say "glasses" instead of "spectacles".

For budget lens, there's the Sony 55-200, Tamron 70-300 LD Di, the Sigma 70-300 APO, or creeping out of the budget range, the more expensive Tamron 70-300 USD. The cheapest fast lens (still quite expensive) is the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 altough it's AF is a tad slow.
 
Thanks for the replies, Myrdhinn i nearly put about the lenses myself but thought better of it especially when i am after some help.
I had looked at the tamron and the sigma but i have read a few stories about the sigma stripping gearing. As with the tamron i read that it is a bit soft at the 300 end but i suppose you get what you pay for. A friend of mine mentioned the beercan lens and have read a few good reviews on these but they are quite old and seem expensive for old technology are they worth it.

as mentioned, depends what you budget is and what type of motorsport. Circuit races tend to be behind large safety fences and the distance between you and said action can require longer zooms (depends how close to the action you can get), but 300mm + if not 400mm is more the required focal lengths. MotorX and rallying, you can get closer to the action so something like the beercan lens (70-210mm f4) would work well.

So it depends what you budget is and what type of motorsport you want to photograph
 
It will be motorbike circuit racing and a bit of road racing if i can talk the wife into letting me go!
As for budget i am looking at upto £200

On that budget, you'll be pushed to get anything worth while, ok the budget 70-300mm offerings from sony, sigma and tamron, or you could look to something like the Minolta AF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 APO D (check out mifsuds used section), they also have the beercan lenses, but personally I would save a bit more money and put the £200 + extra to a better lens.
