New look at Laptops

Son is going to buy a laptop before the vat rate changes, seen a couple within his price range and reasonably decent specs for his needs, both probably suitable for his needs.

Acer Aspire 5742 Z 4gb ram, 500 gb Sata HD 2.0 ghz cpu

HP G56 130 SA 4gb ram, 2.3 ghz cpu 500 gb Sata HD I won't bore you all with the minor stuff.

Both are roughly same specs, Probably not see a great difference in cpu speeds though the HP battery life lasts 2.5 hrs longer than the Acer (according to advert on PC World)

Main use will be internet, docs, MS Office storing his photos/video of toddler daughter (will get a external HD when needed) but not heavy duty editing in Photoshop etc, not for gaming

What I'm wondering if anyone here on TP is using either of these two models can give me a opinion on them. £400.00 is his absolute limit so he will not be interested in anything over his budget.
 
I bought the Acer 5742Z in John Lewis on Monday... £379.

Sooo much faster than my old laptop, plus it's got 4gb RAM, 500gb HDD, Windows 7 64bit, a decent screen and nice (full) keyboard with separate number pad.
Only a mono speaker built in, but there's a headphone socket if you need it, plus HDMI, VGA outputs and 3 x USB2 ports.
Oh, and a 2 year warranty included.

Can't go wrong, unless you want to play 3D games.

Photoshop Elements and Office 2007 Enterprise is no problem. Only tedious bit was transferring 60Gb of music and video from my old laptop :(

Either will do... You're not going to get much better at the price and the processors/systems are pretty equivalent... The J-L deal gives you an extra years guarantee which may sway you...

You will need 3 blank DVDs to perform a 'factory backup' before you start deleting all the guff they put on it :thumbs:
