Hi

Any advice appreciated

I'm currently using a Mini Mac 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 2 GB ram.

I'm finding the Mini Mac to be too slow to process large batches of RAW files, so I'm looking for a new desktop. Probably stick with Mac, as I've had no problems for the last few years.

1. Buy a used Mac Pro from somewhere like Scrumpy Macs, and use my existing monitor etc.

2. Buy a new IMac, but which spec for my photo processing needs

3. Very unlikely, buy a pc desktop with monitor etc - but what should I be looking at?

I too have a mac mini (and a MacBook Pro 15") and if I had the money, I'd go for the 27" iMac.

Before you dash out a spend a lot of cash, you may find that a simple and inexpensive RAM upgrade may help. 2Gb isn't a lot nowadays and an extra 2 may make a significant difference for a small cost.

If you decide to buy a new model, then set yourself a budget. Whatever you get think of at least 4Gb of RAM maybe more. As too which model, that's a very personal choice. I needed to upgrade my machine and was looking at a Mac Pro. then I saw the 27" iMac. maybe not as flexible as the Mac Pro, but does all I want. Quad processor and 8Gb of RAM handles 28Mb RAW files no problem.

Look at what you can afford and go with that. The 21" iMac maybe ideal for you. it may not. Pop into an Apple store and have a play. There's never any hassle and you can take some of your own images in and see what the effect is.

I have the IMac 27" i7 which I have also added a second 4Gb ram. With CS5 now running in 64 bit find it is all I want. The i5 is almost as good my mate has, but again with 8Gb ram. Of course you can always buy ram a little latter.

Looks like one of the new IMacs for me, the Mini Mac can't be upgraded in the ram department - just won't take it.
