Just a head's up on the status of the 17" MBP.

I ordered the new MBP which was supposed to appear in Apple stores end of January and start to ship 2nd Feb.

My 17" was scheduled for delivery 11th Feb. at the latest; but

I kept checking my order status to see if my delivery day may be brought forward, and late last week it was! Today, however, to my surprise I found that my delivery is showing 3 ~ 4 weeks.

I called Apple's hotline to be told that they don't know anything other than there is a delay in delivery. Why, how come, what's wrong, what's causing the delay .. the people at the hotline don't seem to know.

Not a very pleasant surprise :shake:

Try ringing the Local Apple store they may have more information.

Will do that once they open tomorrow morning.

I hope that this is just a temporary safe-guard delay while something is sorted; which, when sorted, will bring back the shipping to the original date.

Apparently all ordered have been pushed back :shake:

Apple isn't saying why, just that delivery is postponed for 3 to 4 weeks!

As much as I don't like this, I'd much rather they postpone delivery, to send a perfect unit, than to get something that may well need servicing. Of course, would have been happier if it shipped, on time (or earlier :p) without any problems (technical or otherwise).

Have they already taken your money or do they take it when it ships? If the former the delay is unacceptable.

Why does this mean that there is a problem with the units themselves? It's more likely down to component supplies being delayed IMO. Macrumors is showing a delay of a couple of weeks being reported to those waiting for orders, not a month though.

that is a shame :(

I got one of the new 15" macbooks :) walked instore got my 15% student discount and walked out with a shiny new MBP :) they rock your gonna love it.

Why does this mean that there is a problem with the units themselves?

The new alu body late 2008 and early 2009 macbook's and macbook pro's have been riddled with bugs and issues, some have even had defective GPU's, screens and logic boards.
There are thousands of reports of such issues and most still do not have cures or fixes.
There is more than adequate reason to suspect that the first revision units could have needed some tweaking before the initial release date.

Apple still have released no statements either after nearly five months of the units being released.
The helplines however take you through a variety of 'known temporary fixes' to see if that helps, so they do acknowledge the problems to an extent but it can be quite aggravating for folk who've just dropped a few grand on a new system that's incapable of meeting professional requirements.

Yeah so why is everyone assuming this is why the 17" is delayed? Anyone that manufacturers anything knows that they are making these things already, there isn't a chance to change anything now.

Whilst I accept that there have been some issues with the Mac laptops I struggle to find evidence of 'thousands of reports'. Macrumors does have a few - but out of the sheer number that have been sold in the last year or so, imagine that this is quite a small percentage.

...I also have just realised. I have only had mine for a week and I'm defending them already. A slippery path to Macs :)

Well firstly I don't think everyone is assuming really mate, I personally mentioned that people have valid reasons to assume that the delays are connected with bugs, issues or defective components.
Apple shipped thousands of macbooks across the globe with defective Nividia GPU's last year, if they had known they would have ceased or delayed shipment if an issue like tat was brought to their attention.
It would have saved an awful lot of money, bad publicity and a fair few law suits.

It is most likely that there are supply problems but I don't blame anyone for suspect attitudes due to last years ball ache.

Yes, the one thing that didn't help the situation much was the folk who jumped to defend Apple and discount everything that suggested that Apple isn't the sun beam that shines from the great silicon god's backside. I was one of those folk until a few months back.

I guess, you'd know a lot more and have read a lot more of you were amongst the more unfortunate, I guarantee it, especially if you've only been aboard the Apple boat for one week, I've been using Apple gear for the last four years and have been reading the discussion forums regularly.

Don't get me wrong, I love Apple gear, will never spend another penny on a microsoft system ever gain but there are thousands of reports, some worse than others, each time I called the Apple helpline and discussed the issues they said so, the issues are on a global scale, one rep even noted that they were now instructed to acknowledge these issues rather than blame users third party displays or go buy a more expensive DVI cable.

Run a search on 'The Black Screen of Death', a widespread issue that miffed a considerable percentage of gamers that bought a alu body MBP in October last year.

The issues I experienced were third party external display related, bearing in mind I bought the unit in November and the problem was discovered and fixed yesterday, by chance. That's quite some time to have a machine costing 2000 odd euro that has not been working as it should.
It turns out that the mini display port cables will not make a connection successfully with some third party displays. The alternative is to buy the dual link adapter which costs 99 euro's, for a cable!

Hehe, I'm (trying) not (to be) a fanboy, but it's hard not to be positive about mac's isn't it.
I'm sure these problems will be properly addressed though.

[S4]Mac's rule[/S4] ^ ^ ^ ^ who said that?

They haven't debited my account just yet, but the balance does show that they've "held" the money! I am not annoyed at that, as I do want to get the machine.

What I am annoyed at, is that they told me over and again that there is no delay and then, without notice, I find that I am pushed back until the middle of March .. without a simple explanation. Now, this is very unlike Apple

In a perfect world, Apple (or any other IT manufacturer) would have a good lead time to test the machine in its finality; but because of the way technology moves and develops, chances are that Apple didn't get to "see" the whole package until a few days before official shipment. Unless they've managed to be super efficient, which I don't believe.

Also, if this was simply a supply issue, then they would have foreseen this. Since the supplier of the parts in delay would have known the quantity on order and periodicity .. and that part would have been something that was manufactured a long while back in the design stage of the machine (as per 1st paragraph) for it to be tested in a finalised model. The supplier would, hence, be able to provide something ... no way would the supply fall to zero! As such, some would have started to receive their 17" as Apple had stated the official launch date to be Saturday 31st Jan. in Apple stores and Apple resellers would have it by Monday 2nd February.

The bottom line is that, it is ok for there to be last minute production and QC problems. After all, these machines are built by mortals.

It's just that I am upset about the "sudden"delay which Apple didn't notify me of.

If you don't mind me asking, but which store did you go to that gave you the 15% discount? I thought that amount of discount was only via online purchases

Whitehouse,

You do know that M$ are one of the largest stakeholders with Apple! Not to say that Apple is a subsidiary of M$, but they're very much in bed together!

It's just that I am upset about the "sudden"delay which Apple didn't notify me of.

That's understandable but you would be much more upset if it arrived and there had been some reason to return it and possibly have it repaired, if your machine develops a fault after a certain time period it's repaired rather then replaced, and as in my case, if Apple don't deem the fault to be worthy of replacement then your stuck with sending it away for repair and waiting for it to return.

:)

 I do know mate but I've often wondered why Microshaft can't build a decent OS then?:lol:

Oh I wholeheartedly agree with you on the 1st paragraph. I am very much happier that they've opted to delay this than to flood the market with "test machines" and have the end-user be a guinea pig! I can't tell you how much I agree with you on this.

I once bought a Compaq laptop (back in the 1990s) that had a manufacture defect, caused a whole bunch of anomalies to my work that I almost didn't want to buy a Compaq again. How did they please me? They gave me a whole new system for my work (I am talking about upper six digits for a whole system, not just a new laptop). That made me stick and defend them until they merged with HP .. and even now I am a very big fan-boy of HP simply because of that incident.

As for your 2nd paragraph, sorry to disagree with you on this. I am a firm believer that M$ do deliver an outstanding OS and that Windows is a God send., I hear you say .. but just think who else offers something as close to this one whole solution? No one! Even IBM couldn't deliver an OS that worked well on IBM machines (remember OS/2  .. what a laugh).

I can assure you, I have done a lot of research before buying. I may have only owned one for a week but I have been deliberating for a long long time. It is inevitable that a large number of Mac laptops will develop faults, unfortunately also inevitable that Apple will bring out the odd **** product line as they have done a number of times in the past. The number of boxes that they still manage to shift despite a global recession is huge - a trawl of threads on this forum would indicate that they are the 'desired geek gadget' - does not stop us though eh?

Apple always get stung by Chinese New Year, always have always will :)

The company I work for always get a first batch off the line to test and QC way before the shipping date. In fact I have a couple of our new product in my desk draw right now. Apple is no different, they will have been making these for a while.

I agree there should have been more warning on the delay, but hey, that's big companies for you, it's just the passing on of the info takes forever.

I guess I am not too upset about all this, other than I ... like most rationale people ... like to get my hands on my new toy asap!

I'm still in "idle time" between having completed my MBA and starting my PhD, this gives me time to roam the UK uncovering new locations and shooting a bit more. Getting the MBP would just mean that I will stay at home to play instead of going out to shoot.

Because of this delay, I've managed to find two wonderful location to go for a weekend get-away and some nifty shots.

Already, the delay is working to my favour :p, just don't tell Apple!

MBP 17" all the way. The screen real estate sold me on this machine, even though I have a home server, but this nice screen is just too good to miss.

Of course, once I can get a hold of cheap 8GB RAM and 512SSD, then that's going in faster than I can blink an eye .. but when do they become cheap

I love my 17" MBP but its just not powerful enough to process 1500-2000 raw files at any speed. That said it's a first gen with 2GB max

See, I was thinking of a macbook or macbook pro which would give me portability to use around the house and I'd be able to hook it up to my 22" screen. Or, perhaps a better spec'd 24" iMac with 7,200RPM HDD.

Tough choice. I keep toing and froing.

I've pretty much ruled out the 17" MBP as, for me, it loses out on portability and the screen isn't as big as the iMac's. Plus it's flippin' expensive.

If it's around the house portability that you need, the 17" is very portable. If taking it to work / school daily then the 15" would be far better.

Keep in mind that iMacs are now being replaced. Apple have told me not to order one now :), and wait for a while. Now, how long is a while is anyone's guess.

But again, I was reluctant about the size of the 17" but then thought about it seriously and realised that (a) I hardly ever take it out into the field. (b) At home, or in the field, the huge screen is very much needed. It has 77% more screen real estate over the 15" MBP and 125% more over the MB. This alone is well worth the price.

For processing so many RAW files in one go, even a fully laden Mac Pro will start to show its weaknesses. That's just a lot to process, not that you shouldn't, but it's a lot. So, knowing how, and when, to limit your importing and processing does help make things run much smoother.

You will not be disappointed when it eventually arrives. I love my mbp17 (I would love yours more though :))..... It is going to be an absolute stonker of a machine and don't forget to do me some pictures for my site. I will be updating it shortly after I get Script Writer to a point where I can leave it a few weeks :)

Hi cowasaki,

Sure am looking forward to getting it. The frustration is building up, sadly. I keep on checking Crucial's web site to see if they have an 8GB RAM upgrade at reasonable cost, nothing yet!

Oh yes, I didn't forget about the pictures

I doubt that very much. They haven't announced anything, and general staff wouldn't tell you if they knew anything as they would loose their jobs. And they don't tell the K staff about new models until the announcement anyway.

Having used a 2.8 MacPro I know it will handle it perfectly. I tried it out before making a decision :) "I'm sorry my computer is too slow" doesn't cut it as an excuse for not getting peoples wedding photos to them.

I doubt 4Gb simms will be reasonable for quite a while yet! With a delay on the mbp17 it might mean that your macbook sale comes at a time that fits in with my sons birthdayand me being able to actually afford it :)

I am surprised that the MacPro 2.8 would handle this well. Whichever way you go, do enjoy it :)

I thought 256SSD were crazy money, until I saw the prices of the 8GB RAM! I've paid some silly money for storage in the past (paid £2,000 back in ealry 1980s for the 1st Apple 5MB hard drive ... and £1,000 for a 1GB CF IBM Microdrive); but never again.
