I see Apple have announced new laptops.

The Mac book seems to have taken a significant price hike, though the Mac Book Pro although more expensive than it's previous model hasn't had such a major increase. It may be better specification I haven't had a chance to digest all the fine detail.
 
I think the price hike on the MacBook is justified, the spec looks very good. I am quite tempted!

Anyone know how the LED Backlit screen compares to the normal glossy screen?
 
I suspect Apple have just dumped all their pro users. Nobody who cares about their images is going to sit in front of a glossy screen.
 
prices are a complete rip off.
they are almost the same in £ in the UK and they are in $ in the US
it would cost you the same to fly to New York, have a weekends holiday and pick one up than it would to just buy one in the UK

Well just taking the base 15" MBP as an example, and without taking any commission into account, it's only £160 more expensive in the UK.
 
I was of two minds earlier in the year whether to sit it out for the new MBP... in the end I went with the outgoing model. Now the new ones are here, I have to say, I'm... less impressed than I thought I would be. Of course, the new GPU is stunning, but my 2.5 has the LED screen, 4GB of RAM, and the older style of keyboard which I actually prefer to the newer one.

Nehalem is coming, with completely new CPU architecture in 2009 [does away with the FSB bottleneck of the Pentium class era]; this redesign seems to me more evolution than revolution. Not a bad thing by any means, but I'd have been a little annoyed had I waited 5 months for this.

a number of comments I have seen around the place refering to the glossy screens say exactly this. no pro photographer would ever want one
 
Glossy screen only and no FW on the Macbook has saved me a bunch of cash! I've bought 4Gb of RAM for my Macbook instead, I've still got the glossy screen but at least I've got the FW.

It will be interesting to see what happens about target disk mode as I found that a really useful feature, maybe it will work over USB now...
 
The nice thing is that the base macbook now has a super drive and not combo drive. The terrible thing is that it is now only possible to get a new macbook/pro with a matt screen if you buy a 17 inch one.

I can see the value of the old model going up amounst people who actually want to use them for stuff that is colour critical. The increase in graphical power and battery power is irrelevant.
 
graphical power on a mac has never been the reason people bought them, apart from the fact mac users don't get them to play gfx intensive games etc, not many apps require masses of gfx processing power, most rely on the processor and ram...I suspect they did this after the failing 8600 gt's

Doesn't Adobe CS4 utilise graphics processor power?

I'm going to New York for new year, so I was hoping for some lens bargains while I was over there... Having looked at the prices though I think I'll leave the purchasing while I'm there.

Reflections are bad, and so are over saturated colours. Both issues with gloss screens.

Photoshop CS4 uses graphics card to accelerate processing. People who spend all day in front of photoshop is part of the apple core audience, and I would say that 99% would never ever ever ever ever use a computer with a gloss screen. I just hope nothing goes wrong with the graphics in my current macbook pro for at least a year (or at least until they realise that photographers need both a matt screen, and firewire 400 + 800). Switching to desplay port and then not including the adaptor with the notebook is a really anoyance too.

But then I am not a fanboy, and I don't think of Steve as God.
 
i stand corrected then, the new CS4 does use graphics power...still, the lack of matte screen is bothering many many many people out there
 
I went for the glossy screen on my 17" macbook pro. For general use/media viewing it's fantastic. But then I have a 23" cinema display as well, which is matt and so I have the best of both worlds.
 
I got the glossy screen on my 17" mbp too - then again, I wasnt into photography back then. Surely the over saturation would be cured with monitor calibration?

I also never really have any more issues with reflections than I have before.

Not all Macs are overpriced. Try building/buying a PC with the spec of the standard MacPro...
 
It seems the forums up and down the land are incensed by the lack of matte screen options for fine colour work. Photographers and graphic designers are fuming about the lack of screen configurability available to them.

It looks as though the outgoing MBP's just became collectables... I'll be hanging on to mine for a while yet... but there's a rush on folks buying up the outgoing model from Apple stockrooms...

For RAM I found direct from Crucial to be the cheapest, hopefully I'll be able to install it tonight.
