New nifty or FD alternative?

Hi,

Having been sat in a hotel room for the past two hours I've been wondering about how to replace my assploded nifty fifty, I'm either going to replace it, possibly with the metal mount version - or the other option is getting a half decent FD-EF mount converter (possibly with AF if they exist or at least the focus beep which I know good ones can support) and then looking around for a good manual lens, maybe even something F/1.2.

Would an old FD be optically as good as something like a nifty?

Open to alternatives!

I have a fd 50mm f1.4 and its brilliant but I was under the opinion that ef-fd converters where very expensive?

Have you thought about m42 lenses? The Asahi Takumar 50mm f1.4 is meant to be very good and could be had for under £100...

You can get an FD-EF converter with the AF confirm for around £50 which is £20 less than the nifty, however if I'm getting a better optically sound FD lens than the nifty I wouldn't mind paying a little more overall. It also gives a bit of fun as well - brings back the college full manual SLR memories.

edit: whats the deal with M42? Is that minolta?

Ah ok, I was under the opinion they cost a bomb. A 50mm f1.4 still costs about £40 but its a great lens, not sure what the going price is of a f1.2.

M42 is a screw mount that a few lens companies have used such as carl zeiss, pentax.. Its a good way to get decent manual focus lenses at a good price.

Looks good, the Carl Zeiss Jena 135mm f3.5 is meant to be very good and that sells for less than that and adapters are cheaper... (m42)

One major advantage of the EOS mount is that there are many mounts that can be adapted to it using a adaptor without an optical lens, FD is not one of these mounts. Much better off looking at M42/Olympus etc. mounts.

FD adaptors have an element in them, generally a crap one, which not only has a teleconvertor effect (on top of the 1.6 crop) also reduces light recieved (a stop?). All in, not worth it with FD IMHO.
