The 600mm is similar price to the Canon, (Nikon only £800 retail more!!, if you regard that as not much more) and Nikon weights a little less

I'd be looking at the used market …… so more Canons available

I'm getting more effective with the 600mm (non VR) that I have - it is just too big and heavy to take on an airplane

Be interesting to see if they become available easier than the new 300mm f4. They are a lot of money for most hobbyists and will probably take a good while to filter onto the seconhand market.

New Nikon 500mm f4E - 800 grams lighter and £2,300 more expensive than the AF-S "older" version

Having the now "older" version of the 500mm VR, to be honest I cannot see me even thinking of upgrading to save a bit of weight plus will the new coating on the lens improve my shots, I do not think so especially as mine are all hand held grab shots, Im happy to stay with what I got.

but would you pay £8,150 to buy a new one if you did not have the old ……. or would you look to Sigma or the used market, (old 500mm)

Simple answer, no definitely not.

I would look at the secondhand market for the same lens as I have now or after seeing some of Sigma shots on here, the Sigma seems
certainly worthy of serious thought.
 
There's more to these lenses than a weight saving. The Fluorite lens elements help lower the weight and also give better image quality. The MTF chart for the 500mm is near perfect, meaning fantastic contrast and sharpness wide open. Nikon also state better AF tracking with the new lenses. There out my price range sadly having acquired a 500mm VR fairly recently but with Mirco Adjust issues I've not seen it's true potential, though I've had one in the past. Hopefully once i get the issues sorted ( it's back at Nikon for the second time as they didn't sort it first time) I can enjoy the quality of it. Hoping to see an improvement in Extender use with these new lenses.

If the 400mm FL E is anything to go by, these lenses will be fantastic, I tried the 400mm ant the photo show and the IQ and sharpness wide open was amazing.
 
I own the 'old' 400mm 2.8 and 600mm 4.0 and the saving in the camera bag weight is huge. I could never afford to replace both lenses to the new versions, however I would probably be keen to replace the 400mm with the new version once prices settle as my main lens. I may even sell the 600mm to fund and then rely on the new 1.4x TC to make up the difference.
