That is great, when did this news first break?
Possibly when the other "New Nikon Stuff" threads started.....
Having just agreed a deal with Whitey to get the original version of this lens I thought I'd finally got the best lens I'll ever own. Now there is a newer better version I can still live in the hope that one day I'll own this one.
Will it actually be much better though and do we have a view of how ridiculously expensive it'll be?
Sorry Ross,I deleted my initial post,it has been a long night and it was uncalled for.
Yeah but the AF just isn't up to the standard of more recent Nikon pro lenses and for sports togs it's been a bugbear. Also I get some nasty vignetting on the D3 with the current model which the fatter design seems to address.
Now.. has anyone seen anyone selling them??

Hmmm can't say I've noticed the "old" 70-200VR being exactly slow on the AF front, far from it - and I shoot about the fastest action going. Then again, I've little to compare it to apart from primes and its never going to be as fast as those. Nothing in the press release suggests the VRII variant is any better either... I am sure they'd trumpet about it if it was...
Also, don't think I've ever heard of actual vignetting on FX... only drop offs in sharpness in the extreme corners under certain conditions. I know this point has been something which has resulted in all sorts of internet arguments though!
Meh, I just must be very lucky then with the "AF problems" because the D300/70-200VR combo rarely ever misses a shot...
Vignette problems, no idea personally, only as I say a load of endless arguments about it on FX.
I actually quite like the vignetting on Full Frame with the current 70-200 - I think it helps bring focus the eye on the centre of the image
