Hi All,

Not been on for a while, but have just recently bought myself a Nikon D5000.
All seems good so far and start lessons on the 10th so look out for samples of my amazing images:lol:
However I do have a couple of questions as much about the suplier as the camera itself. Firstly is it common that the user manual is a stappled together photocopy of a glossy booklet? Secondly is there anyway of finding out if my camera has been sold and returned before?
I wasnt too bothered untill I read some reviews of the on-line company on here, plus I have just discovered that my credit card was not credited for the lens I purchased but was then told it was out of stock. (they told me my card had been credited)
The camera seems to work ok, but i'm no profesional so would not really know.
Going to call the comany tomorrow with regards to my £139 credit, will let you know how I get on.

Cheers

The Manual should be approx 200 pages of bound black and White paper with quite a solid spine about a5 size. Definately not stapled together. Where did you buy from?

Errr....the manual should be a proper printed book, there should also be a label on the box with the details of how to register the camera for the 2-year warranty. If that's missing, or the box has sticker (or the remains of one) over the tab where the the box lid seals at the front then there's a fair chance it's a refurbished, rather than new camera.

the original D5000 manual is not a "glossy" manual but is a black and white edition
and it is bound like a normal book - not stapled

I would monitor ANY transactions on your Credit card very carefully
and inform the bank of any suspicious activity

if you are not happy - get in touch with your CC company asap

Here’s a pic of the manual, Everything in the box looked packaged as brand new and the camera shows no marks and does look new. The box has not got any signs of a seal either old broken or new, the box looks new and unmarked. The company said they register the product as part of the service so a warrant registration form was not included, only a form from them outlining the 5 year warranty they provide. Maybe I'm being paranoid but only a beginner I wouldn’t know if some of the cameras features were not working properly.

You might get a better idea of whether the camera is used/refurbished, or not, by looking at the exif information for the total shutter actuations. If it's not pretty close to the number of shots you've taken then it would suggest it's been used before.

Was it advertised as new?

they register the product...?

sounds like a grey import....you have not said which company you used ....

I'm not too sure I like the sound of the registration process

where did you buy it from ?

was it considerably cheaper than other suppliers ?

The reson i'm asking is that if your not happy with it and have3 doubts it may be worth getting a refund and buying of a reputable dealer , might be worth that extra piece of mind

If refurbished would/can the shutter actuations info be re-set to zero. Would Nikon UK have a record of the serial number being restistered before.

It was advertised as new and about £20 less than Jessops.

How do I check the shutter actuations?

Thanks

...where did you buy it from ?..

would help to know [4th time asking...]

My D40 was reportedly a return from chain store seller
refurbished/checked-over by Nikon
Nikon kit box resealed by Nikon
shutter count = 0

I dont want to name any names just yet as there could be no issues at all.
So the shutter count could have been set to zero then.
I will contact Nikon UK today and see if they can tell me weather the s/n has been through the repair/ruturn process and wether the s/n has been registered with them.

The manual looks like a printed copy (probably from the PDF downloaded from Nikon's website and thus in breach of Nikon's copyright).

Try registering it with Nikon UK website, if it is a grey import you will soon get told they don't recognise the serial number.

Lesson learnt after buying a Nikon P5000 camera, from a store I now know often sells grey imports.

Update,

Spoke to Nikon UK who agree the camera is most likely an import and therefore not covered by Nikon Uk warranty.
Relayed this info to the on-line retailer and hopefully will be able to get refund. Am trying to arange return personally as I only live down the road from the warehouse.
I'm still out of pocket for the lens that was not in stock and cost not credited to my card.

I can guess.... 5 yr warranty is a recent improvement to the.3 yeats they have been offering... ;)

Last time I bought a refurbed Nikon, there was a spot of red paint in the tripod mount to mark it as a refurb (in a Coolpix 3100). Manual etc was exactly the same as the new one I had bought for myself (the refurb was for Dad who liked the price!).

I can appreciate the calls for naming said company, however so far they have been pretty good about the whole thing. They agreed on Friday to take back the camera for a full refund. I dropped the camera off this morning and am now just waiting for my card to be credited.

First lesson booked for the 10th, so let’s hope my money has been returned by then, and camera purchased.
