...What is the point of a new DX only 85mm Macro?..........

This one

Because most of the cameras they sell are DX format?

It suggests that they're not planning to abandon DX any time soon. As for the reasoning behind it? Not a scooby

You and I alike Graham, especially at the price.85mm Macro, fair enough, but DX only doesn`t make a jot of sense.

Because they already have four macro primes that aren't DX?

Yes, but a 60mm becomes a 90 on the DX body and is F2.8,the 105 becomes a 150,yet both are compatible with DX and Fx. I still fail to see why they would make an 85 DX.........

Are there issues with the performance of non-DX lenses on DX bodies?

Not that i`m aware of. I have a 35,50,85,80-200 etc,etc that work fine on both formats.

I guess Nikon know what they are doing, just seemed odd.

The 60mm isn't ƒ/2.8 when used at macro range. It's got a 62mm filter ring as opposed to 52mm for the new lens. I guess smaller, lighter and cheaper ruled the day and they can sell twice to anyone who's used DX as a stepping stone to FX.

As well as locking people into DX then I guess it makes commercial sense that most buyers of this lens are likely to be at the newbie/amateur end of the spectrum and probably keen to buy something they're comfortable with. If they buy a DX lens for their DX camera then they know - or think they know - they're getting the 'right' one.

I wish they'd produce something along the lines of the mpe-65 instead of these stop gap lenses :(

at a guess, it's cheaper to produce DX only lenses as the glass doesn't have to be sweet all the way to the edge, also the build quality for 'amateur' use brings down the price
