New Nikon lenses

Yeah but no "new" lenses...

Nikon need to fill gaps in their lineup rather than update current ones IMO.

agreed Pete, I don't understand the need for an update to the 18-200 DX either but hey ho.

D300s and D3000 as well

Hugh

Nikon are certainly going for the "Gear Whore" market.........:cuckoo:

The softness is only there for pixel peepers,99.99% of people don`t see it.

Nikon are taking the pee........:)

With respect though, an improvement to the softness problems of the 70-200mm on full frame sensors, would be no bad thing.

Certainly D300s video mode, WHY!

people keep saying that about the current 70-200 & I've never had a problem with it or understood why?. It just strikes me as people read the DP review and then quote verbatim - maybe if you pixel peep the corners in some conditions yes, but not in the real world

Hugh

I can understand the logic is "fixing" the 70-200 VR, and the need for a "lower" entry system than the D5000 .. hence the D3000. But the updated 18-200, D300s makes me wonder if Nikon are just toying with us until the economy picks-up :suspect:?

Fully agree. I have yet to see a shot FF with the current 70-200 that I would say had any issues. Yes there is a very slight vignette but it's not really that noticable unless you're more interested in the pixels than the image.

Beyond the VR II system, which as I understand it gives you 1-stop more than VR I, what are the other updates? What is the point of this?

Hopefully........;).........so that gear whores sell their perfectly good lenses to tight wads like me who won`t pay Nikons over inflated prices for new equipment that,in most cases,is no better than the models they are replacing...........:naughty:

Huraaaaaa...........

Just to add, I think I ADD a vignette to 90% of my images so the new one would add more work

I'm thinking the same as fractster, could be time to pick up a nicely priced current model in the near future :D

Can't work out if I'm annoyed or not about this updated 70-200. I'd been holding out on buying one as this rumour was floating around for a while, but I finally caved in and picked one up about 3 months back.

Should I be annoyed? :)

I think the whole point of the updated 70-200VR is market perception; even if there was a chance that a mere fraction of a percent of complainers have issues with this lens, Nikon cannot afford that with their pro. grade equipment.

The market on consumer product, on the other hand, are more tolerant .. or should be.

So, while I wished for a update for the overdue 40-800VR, I do see the logic in the 70-200VR lens being updated.

do you like the one you have? - no need to be annoyed then. I don't think it'll loose much/any against what you paid for it

Hugh

I suppose I should of put in my original post, that I was only excited about the new lens is because the current 70-200mm 2.8 will come down in price so I can afford to buy one!

That would have got some of the market back for them, rumours still around on this lens being replaced.

what you're saying makes sense, but I've never met a Nikkon shooter who was unhappy with this lens. It does appear to of been in the normal upgrade cycle for the lens though & I hope this is the reason they've done it.

But why a new 18-200 DX though?

Sorry I wasn't try to rub it in, saw your post after mine. I had it on good authority the announcement was coming first week in Aug, thats the only reason I hung on.

I love it. The apparent softenss towards the corners doesn't bother me, but the vignetting at anything under f4 might start to. However, at the moment I'm going through a phase of purposefully adding vignetting to a lot of images pp, so at the moment I see it as a bonus :D

it won't just had a very quick glance through my images @ f2.8 and d700 with this lens. Theres a few its noticeable and only one it would even start to bother me

Except the expected price is listed at just shy of £2K !!!! so I'd expect the old ones to keep their price if this is so.

Agree, I wish they actually started talking to people who really use their cameras and pro togs when updating them with new features... What the D300s really needs is a bracketing button back and a proper latched memory card door not some of those gimmicks they added like movie mode (they are nice to have by all means but less useful for taking photos).

The new 70-200 also completes the trio of zooms from 14mm to 200mm with nano-coating and new lens designs for digital.

If, and it's very likely, the new lens hits the same level as the 14-24 and 24-70's then it'll be some trio of zooms for the Nikon shooter.

For sports and news togs there has always been grievances with the AF on the 70-200 and the amount of vignetting on FX. Nikon are responding to the wants of their professional users (having taken so many away from Canon since the D3 came out and after Canon dropped the ball with the MK3) rather than trying to sell something new to it's amateur market (although that's always a bonus).

Just my 2p :)

You haven't spent enough time with whinging sports togs then :)

and to quote from Nikons press release:

Robert Cristina, Manager Professional Products at Nikon Europe, says: “The optical design has been completely re-mastered to meet the demands of today’s image sensors. It also works better at slow shutter speeds and is adapted to complement the latest autofocus technologies too.”

Yes but it's not the Pro's complaining about the current 70-200.

Yes it is. It gets whinged about all the time and I know a number that have been badgering Nikon EU directly about the update. Depends what kind of pro you're talking about because I'm sure the wedding togs love it to bits :)

True - but this is because of a new A/M focus mode to provide autofocus priority when the manual focus ring is handled during shooting.

We do :D

And what a technological marvel that update is!

Personally I read it as - "we've fixed the AF, but certainly aren't admitting there was a problem with the original one" ;)

Don't get me wrong the original 70-200 is bloody wondrous and for you wedding guys/girls I'm sure the update will be fairly pointless, but for me it will be very welcome..... not life changing, but welcome :)

It occasionally suffers in low light/low-contrast situations with moving subjects...
Hopefully the new one will address that issue...

The AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II lens is scheduled to ship in November 2009 at an expected street price of US$2399.95.

So translate and you are looking at around £2200

the news articles I've seen about it quote the UK price as £1,999

Eh?

The current 70-200 is £1450 right now (and more typically £1550) which is $2378 today.

Our RRP is £1999 for the new version, so try $3280 on for size....it's going to sell well at £1750 though.
