New PC laptop, about £500?

hi everyone
it's been a while since I've researched buying a new laptop, so any thoughts/considerations would be appreciated!

I currently have an Acer Aspire 5920, Intel Core 2 Duo, T5450 1.67ghz, 4gb ram, Vista Home Premium, 15.4" screen.

It's been a great laptop (still is), but in recent months have started to notice it struggle/slow down a bit as I use Adobe CS3 more and more and do more photo editing. You know when your workflow starts to slow down a little bit as you start to wait for things to happen :) (I know we're only taking seconds rather than minutes, but it all counts!)

So this is mainly what I'd use it for (as well as the usual internet browsing, record keeping, etc.). I'm not into gaming, so don't need spec to cover that.

It can't be a Mac as, a) I prefer PCs and b) I have a Windows version of CS3 which I would look to reinstall. The one thing I know nothing about is graphics cards, which I'm guessing is something to consider?

So I'm thinking an upgrade to something a bit faster, better processor, larger screen (?), budget is a little flexible if necessary, but £500ish would be great... the floor is open!

having to step up my search as I think the current laptop is dying slowly before me... any suggestions on spec to go for?
 
If you can stretch a bit, you can get an Acer 5750 with i7-2630QM for £579. E.g.: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_575_1068073.html

The new gen i7's are really, really quick. (don't go with the i7-2620M - that's only a dual core i7, the 2630 is quad core).

If you're doing photoshop or lightroom a lot, all 4 cores can be used, so more cores should mean better performance :). As to other bits: as much memory as you can afford and as high a res. screen as possible.

wow that looks a really good deal, have you/anyone bought from those guys before? I do like Acers...

I would also look at spending the extra £50 or so to get the gold 3 year extended warranty.

edit - it's only £10 more at Amazon

could be tempted by that, from a known source too...

Not used SaveOnLaptops before. Just googled it and found the lowest price and posted that. If you're happier with Amazon, then go with that.

The i7-2630QM is a really great processor - I have one in my laptop and it deals with 7D files effortlessly.

Can vouch for SaveOnLaptops as my Father in law used them only 2-3 weeks ago to buy a laptop.

No complaints so far!

If you can find a refurbed dell 8510W (Workstation Laptop) its a good machine, which I use myself
