New PC problems

Hi,

I built a new PC this weekend, but am having a few problems. I used to build all my PCs until a few years back when I decided I couldn't be bothered with the hassle, but decided to build one again and am regretting it!

I've got :

Core i5 2500
8Gb RAM
Asus P8z68V-LE motherboard
OCZ Vertex 3 120Gb SSD
AMD 6950 2gb graphics
1tb WD HDD
Corsair AX850 PSU

The machine had a Corsair AX750 in it originally, but after I had built the machine, installed Win7, and left it downloading overnight. I woke up to find the machine dead. PSU was dead, took it back and was replaced with an AX850.

It was back up running last night, left it downloading again. Was fine when I woke up, but decided to Blue Screen while I was having breakfast. On restart the motherboard reported a power surge and halted the system.

Since restart, it's all been fine.

It's plugged into a surge protector btw. I'm a little concerned that the motherboard is dodgy, given that I'm using an expensive, top of the line PSU and I've had one pop already and another one surge :S

Any other ideas? Or is this just the usual 'settling in' period you get with a completely new build....I always found PCs to take a while to stabilise.
 
What OS Would you be using?, i have noticed there seems to be some conflicts with the latest Win7 updates and Amd Graphics, my secondary laptop is running win 7 and and Amd and since i updated windows last week, I overheat and shut down 2 or 3 times a night if i leave it booted up
 
Running Win7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Bit of a type there actually, the graphics are ATI (although technically same company)
 
Sounds strange. I have an i7-2600K based system with Nvidia graphics running off a Corsair 650W power supply. That's on 24/7. Have to say I'd be concerned too. Does the DIOS have the ability to disable surge protection?
 
That's a great PSU. Of course, no company's perfect, but to have two dodgy ones would be highly unlikely.

Try running it out of the case. The motherboard box is always a good piece of cardboard to stand it on. Sounds to me like a short somewhere. You did use standoffs in the correct places?

Anything can short, from HDDs to fans to unused molex / sata leads.

Try running it caseless; at least that will narrow down the fault.

Of course, it could be the mobo. I'd be more likely to blame that than expect two bad PSUs from Corsair.
 
id agree with mike, maybe check the standoffs and also dont overtighten the screws sometimes that can crush the board.

maybe try it with minimal parts connected and rotate the parts and see if it fails with a particular part connected.
