New Pentax Mirrorless

It has an aps-c 16mp sensor (same as in K5 / D7000?), and uses all Pentax k mount lenses. Unusual looking beast:-

Looks alot like the Q to me, doesnt really make sense in terms of size/performance compaired to the alternatives(DSLR in this case rather than a compact) but Pentax are banking on the current fashion for mirrorless to help sell it. Perhaps not a terrible business move for them given that both these systems probabley cost a tiny fraction of the likes of the NEX/NX/M43/1 Series did to devolp.

The 40mm 2.8 DA lens it comes with seems alot more interesting given that its a good deal cheaper and even smaller than the Limated version.

Just had a look at the Pentax website and got to say the yellow one is awful. That is just ugly, it looks like a toy camera that I used to have when I was about 6 years old. I know there's a certain penchant for retro these days, but I think I'll stay with the modern. Even if it gave excellent IQ and cost half the price of my 7D I still wouldn't buy one. The build quality on looks alone shouts of bits breaking off within days of purchase, i.e. flash falling off with the slightest bump.

It has to be, since from the sounds of it, it is only compatible with the K-01 (and I am guessing all the other mirrorless future Pentax cameras). It seems that the XS lenses are not compatible with the rest of the K lineup. Shame really.

I am having very hard time trying to decipher whom this camera is aimed at. You can't realistically use it with zoom lenses as there is no VF. So you are limited to the pancake primes. If that is what you are after that is fine but then why wouldn't you invest £150 more for the similarly sized but better K-5?

The only real reason is if you really want some great video. In which case fine but other than that?

Buffled. Even so I need to go and have a play with one it might actually in person feel and look better than how I imagine it from the pictures. I am though now looking forward to what Olympus has to present as it is not the done deal I had hoped it to be.

there is a rear screen so no problem with composition.

I do tend to agree with the general feeling though - not only is this mirrorless but it's also pointless ... :thinking:

There is no definite information on whether the 40mm is K01 only, some say it will fit a dslr, others not. Although I doubt any of the other larger lenses that are coming will, as the rear element will probably protrude into the camera body too much.

My point is not with composition but try to zoom or even heck hold it at arms length with a fairly large lens like my 16-50 while using the live view... Absolutely no way of taking a shake free picture SR or no SR. I am really surprised it is actually going to be coming with an 18-55 and 50-200 zooms as kit.... I am not sure what were they thinking.

I tried doing video with my K-7 and Sigma 50-500mm once. As you know, you can only use the rear screen for that so I imagine it would be a similar experience.

Wasn't my best work ..... :lol:

funnily enough, the video 'review' below mentions the sturdy build quality at the same time as showing the pop up zoom. Not sure if i'd buy one myself, but glad to see a different take on mirrorless that would suit me if nikon went down this route. Id love to have a d7000 sensor in a small mirrorless body, evf and tilt-able screen, hotshoe.

Watching that video made it look even more like a toy camera. :eek:

More so with the small aperture that was on the lens in the video, :eek: just like the fixed small aperture on the cheap plastic film cameras.

It's apparently designed to appeal to the 'style conscious'. :eek:

I must be style unconscious then. :lol:
 
The more I look at it the more I hate it's design. Pointless is probably the close description I've seen. Want a Pentax? Really? - Buy a K-5.

I am sure they will still sell some of these, my guess mostly in Japan, where they apparently have a true obsession with mirrorless cameras at the moment. I do see enough tourists using their dRebels and smaller Nikons at an arms length through the LCD.

Would be my guess, as I said I'd imagine they devolpment costs werent really that great given that it seems to be not much more than DSLR with the mirror/OVF taken out and some wacky styling.
 
That really is an ugly camera, and tbh i can't see a lot of people buying it.

From a user on a forum in Singapore who has just got his hands on one.

Many among the group plan to get one. No brainer upgrade for those shooting manual focus. The screen is good enough that any viewfinder is frankly redundant. New 40mm lens is really flat. Could do with a recessed thumb grip but the design definitely grows on you. Ribbed rubber texture is secure. Image quality is terrific, as is video. Camera is so quiet and vibration free. Breaks new ground in the mirrorless segment but DSLR purists will never understand this camera, but who cares, this camera will attract new users in a big way particularly price wise. Overall a big thumbs up to this camera.

Have I missed what new ground it breaks? :shrug:

Make a mirrorless camera that hasn't gained much of a size reduction compared to a DSLR, has lost any kind of viewfinder in the process, and doesn't even get a smaller lens system to reduce the size. :eek:

And then add to that the styling, :cuckoo: which may appeal to the Japanese market, but I doubt will appeal much anywhere else with so many other mirrorless cameras about, though some with only marginal better styling. ;):lol:

it's dearer than most entry level DSLRs? :bang:
I'm sure that it's output will be good (Sony sensor+Pentax processing) but it's not really pocketable & an A35 does all that this does & more.
 
I really fail to see any redeeming feature about this camera.

They gone against everything that appeals about a mirroless system and removed all advantages of a full blown SLR.

No thanks.
