Think iam going to go for a Netgear DG834G, but their seems to be five versions, what version do people recoemend as being the best?
recommend. Iam with TalkTalk ADSL.
 
Basically, the different versions are just when netgear decide to add/change something, so the higher the version number, the newer/better it'll be.
 
Ok cool, do you know much about the custom fw's that you can run on them?
 
Can't you pull them up on the netgear site and compare the differences yourself?
 
by custom firmware, do you mean 3rd party? If so, you'll have to check the websites for that firmware for the details on it, I don't use 3rd party firmware, as if there's a problem, it could be really bad, and it's also possible for someone to program the firmware to send a copy of all Internet data to a specific IP, so I wouldn't trust my data's defiantly safe. Stick to official firmware, unless your wanting to do something very special/specific, it'll be able to do it just as well/better than any 3rd party firmware.

That's a bit of a Luddite view ;)

3rd party firmware is generally more configurable, has more features and often faster than the OEM firmware. I ran DD-WRT on my old router. Haven't upgraded my current router as DD-WRT was Work In Progress when I bought it and don't want the downtime on the network whilst I mess around with it!!.

As to which version of router - not sure which is most compatible with your ISP. It depends if your exchange is unbundled by Talk Talk (you can find out here: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search ) as they will use different equipment to BT. I'm with Be and I think the earlier Netgear routers are more compatible (i.e. have higher sync speeds) than the later ones.
 
I run DD-WRT on one of my routers and I've found it a lot more realiable than the standard netgear firmware.
Best looking on the website to check what versions are supported as quite often the haven't diffrent hardware.
