Hi im currently looking to buy my first dslr set up

As a complete beginner im looking to shoot sports and night stuff further down the line once ive sussed the basics

I have been looking at the likes of the d70/d40 to start out with but after looking at them i think i would rather spend the money now on a better body so i dont need to upgrade later down the line

Ive been looking at the d300 and d7000 as these look like they will suit sports shooting better than than anything else in the range that isnt a pro camera.
Which would be the better of the two to invest in?
I know the D300 has a built in af motor so that opens up more lens choices

Not looked into cannon dslr's so im not sure what there equivalent would be but recommendations are welcome

You probably need to set some kind of budget so that people can help advise. Personnally, if I was starting out again and knew what I was interested in shooting, I would find the best lens for the job first and then spend the remainder of my money on whatever camera body I could afford - bodies nearly always get upgraded later down the line despite our original intentions.
 
As already noted, whats you budget??

Don't discount buying 2nd hand. Either through the forum (best deals) or through retail outlets 2nd hand can save you ££££'s.

Have a think about what you will be shooting most often and work towards that. Sports is self explained and points towards 100-300mm as a working range.

Night stuff is a broad description, maybe a 50mm would suit this. They are pretty cheap and workable in low light.

Everyone has got to their current kit lineup in different ways, so there is no 'correct' way. But make sure you look at all the options before pumping your money it to kit you could regret buying.

Got around £800 to get a body and a half decent tele lens. I was thinking of spending the cash on better lenses and a cheaper basic body but dont see the point as a beginner, going for the faster better lenses until ive managed to build some good basic photography skills

The plan was to buy 2nd hand for both.
The thinking behind getting something like the d300/d7000 was so that if i wanted/needed to upgrade, then it would be to one of the pro dslr's. I would then have a decent 2nd back up cam.

I didnt like the idea of starting with something like a d70 then going to a d300 then going to a pro cam. I would rather just get something at the top end of no pro range as i would be less likely to outgrow it

Whats cannons equivalent of the d300, d7000?
