New Sony a6000 is out and ships with E-mount

I could see this coming - the NEX series have adapted the alpha name, while the old dSLT A-mount cameras are effectively being phased out.

A600 is reported to be a hybrid of NEX6 and NEX7 - both pretty capable tools. Since the consumers still prefer more traditional cameras to EVILs it is no surprise SONY opted to adopt the old name. Now it just wouldn't make sense to keep both formats, which would lead to confusion and added expense. An adapter will suffice until there are more E lenses. Sony may deny this, but this is exactly what happened with Olympus a few years ago. 4/3 was dead as soon as first m4/3 landed in the shops, despite different claims.

Sony seems to be in direct competition with Samsung's expanding line of Android cameras. Canon and Nikon still stay committed to traditional dSLRs.

The very first and all NEX's have been Alphas, though. I don't think A-mount is leaving, Sony released 4 lenses last year (which is actually more than other years), and Hasselblad just started making A-mount camera - I can't imagine they'd join something that was being phased out. No doubt Sony have spent more time with the E-mount(specifically FE) and RX cameras recently.

Not sure what you mean by the Samsung comment? There are 3 Samsungs with Android, only one being mirrorless (that's double the price of the a6k). If we're talking about apps? The Playmemories app store is pretty clunky and poor at the moment. I think the a6k is trying to compete with the Fuji XE2, EM10 and GX7.

Anyway, I won't be upgrading from my 5R. I am interesting in seeing how this lower spec'd EVF is better than the previous one (from the reports i've read so far) and that silver body option looks nice. This is the second Sony product in a row that's came out at a great price.

Sorry, I forgot the Fuji The other two have smaller sensor. I would watch Samsung very closely. They may only have NX30 and NX300 now, but are planning to release a high end body and some very serious lenses (something Sony doesn't have in E mount) over next 2 years. Android apps may be a very significant development when you factor in electronic shutter. Think auto electronic ND grads (in simple terms - better exposed images without HDR) and much more...

Hasselblad are just buying old tech from sony and attach a fancy handles for mere £10,000. Most people simply find it very 'entertaining'. They are really not an indication of things to come.

As soon as Sony has AF performing close to their dSLT standards there is no more point of continuing the old line. Probably it is comparable already. There is no viewfinder in either of them.
