Hi all,

I've been a 'lurker' for a while now and this is my first post.

I used to have a 350D until, by complete surprise, I was given a 40D for Christmas.

With my 350D I used to use 50mm 1.4, 18-55 Kit lens, 17-85, 100-400 L.

Now strictly speaking these lenses are shared between me and my dad. So I need a new standard zoom for the 40D.....

I have always looked on in awe at the 17-40L. Now I have come to look at getting a standard zoom I'm not sure f4 would be enough.....so....I have complied a list of lenses that are possibilities....

I know there is a similar thread to this going on at the moment but mine takes on a slightly different route and I didn't want to gate crash the other thread.

So....

Canon
17-40L f4 - £499
17-55 f2.8 IS USM - £654
24-70 f2.8 L USM - £770
24-105 f4 L IS - £649

Sigma
18-50 f2.8 EX DC HSM Macro - £330
24-70 f2.8 EX DG Macro - £278

Now almost immediately I think I can remove the 24- lenses as this just seems too long...I do landscapes, architectural, portraits etc and think that I would miss the 'wide angle'. I also think I would really like 2.8.

So onto my question....are the canon lenses really worth this premium (I don't see IS as essential at this range) or are the sigma's a false economy?

Sorry for this tedious post...

Regards

i opted for the 17-55 IS for my 40D. my reasons were:

Its very sharp. Canon have built this using 'L' quality glass, and if it werent for the lack of weatherproofing / construction of a true L lens, its pretty much the same quality from what ive read.

Its wide enough for my needs at 17mm

the extra reach at the 55 end and the f2.8 made it more useful to me than the 17-40 L

Ok, I agree the IS isn't essential on a lens of this range, but if your shooting in low light at 55mm, it can still be useful.

You can get it for £540 + delivery from Kerso

I cant comment on how it compares to the Sigma 18-50, so best to check the reviews for both of these lenses and see how they both fair.

Hum for me it's 24-70 f2.8 or the 24-105 f4 IS fro a walkabout/general pupose lens. I'm tending towards the lighter/longer range 24-105 I think.

I have the EF 10-22 which at approx 350gms always stays in my bag, so I'm covered at the wide end.
