New Tamron 150-600mm VC

Someones trying to copy the ART finish. Looks a nice lens. No doubt it will launch overpriced (70-200) but when the price settles it should be affordable. Good find.

Thought so. They always launch at high prices then nobody buys then they drop ....... a lot. The 70-200 has dropped by £400 (UK prices). An equiv drop in this would be around £700. Still very expensive though compared to Sigma.

Where did you see the price? Every site on google search says pricing is not available yet, maybe someone just took a wild guess and made sure it is higher in case it is expensive? This would be like the new nikon beast.

And what about MTFs or is it too early. I would hope it is very sharp and really well made (not plastic!) for the price.

From their recent lenses I'd say it most likely will be very sharp...

It is super tele super zoom at the end of the day. Will it better 100-400L or will it manage to compete with 400/5.6L for sharpness, or none?

I see that, but as I mentioned, do you not think they are just covering their ass in case it turned out fairly expensive?

I think the independents need to be coming up with products which the OEMs haven't thought of. So credit to Tamron for making something a bit different. I hope it does well for them.

A couple of years ago I was talking to someone high up in Sigma UK who was trying - and failing - to persuade the Japanese parent company to make a 200-600mm f/4. They had the capability, he said, and if they got it right every wildlife photographer in the world would want one. This Tamron isn't in the same league, but it's interesting nonetheless.

MTF charts and sample images (albeit small ones) are up HERE http://www.tamron.eu/en/lenses/overview/single/product/sp-150-600mm-f5-63-vc-usd-5.html?tx_keproducts_pi6
It looks reasonable from the charts and IF it outperforms the cheap Sigma zooms (50-500, 150-500..) it could be a popular lens for those that cannot afford much more expensive Canon or Nikon teles #timewilltell

Even if the pre-order price is double the actual price a while after launch, it's still way more expensive than the Sigma 150-500 OS (or even the 50-500 OS which is supposed to be better). I'll stick to the 70-300 Nikkor and use it on a 1 series or a crop body if I want/need extra apparent reach (although cropping into a D800 image is the same thing effectively).

That would be interesting. I wonder if we may see something like this now to rival Canon's 200-560..?

I'll hold my breath with this, could be an interesting option to the Sigma range, although what it gains at the long end it lost at the short end, well at least for the 50-500.

If only it was that easy. Cropping is not the same thing at all.

As an early indicator, those MTFs look very good, especially at the 600mm end.

Certainly an interesting lens.

In what way is cropping into a larger sensor different to using a crop (smaller) sensor? I'll agree that a longer lens would be better but there's no difference between cropping into a D800 image and using a D70 or 1 series body without cropping.

Sure, but that isn't what you said in post #22 ;)

What I said was what I would continue doing, not what was better! I used to have a Sigma 150-500 but found the weight too much to bother carrying on the off chance I'd want a long lens. Much as I'd love to have a complete range of lenses available, I'm too cheap to a) splash out on the lenses and b) pay someone minimum wage to carry them around for me!!!

IME, a long lens is something you go out with the intention of using, not on the off chance...

Think I'll stick with the Sigma 120-300... Especially if it retails at that price or similar to the current 120-300 price! Pin sharp up to 420 f/4 and still reasonable at 600 f/5.6, which the Tamron won't be able to do, even if it is as sharp, but considering the 150-500 performance I doubt it.

It may be a lot lighter though which would be the only benefit...

Now that would be nice! I seriously think about swapping the 120-300 for that, DoF difference between the f/2.8 and f/4 in the overlapping area would be minimal (although you'd lose that stop of light) but you'd gain Bokeh and a stop of light at 400+mm

Well no... But it's an f/5-6.3 lens so it's a physical impossibility for it to do 400 f/4 or 600 f/5.6...

That's probably my poor use of commas!

I meant it won't be able to get the apertures of a 120-300 with TC's and if it's anything like the sharpness of the Sigma 150-500 then it probably won't be as sharp. The latter is very much something we need to wait until the lens comes out before we can decide!:)

Yes but going on their recent performance (70-300, 70-200, 24-70) and the fact that they have bettered sigma in all of the above, it's more likely that this new one will better the rival sigma too. It's more than possible that it won't...but likely it will ;)

Kind of agree. It's only a hunch, but I have a feeling this lens might be better than any zoom/converter combo at the long end and fill a handy niche - something seriously long at 600mm, decently sharp, and relatively affordable when the price settles, at least compared to Canikon primes. It's not too heavy (f/6.3 helps there) though closest focus of 2.7m isn't that great. VC will be good I'm sure, though how the AF shapes up (f/6.3 doesn't help there) remains to be seen.

Perhaps they had to compromise the close focus to get it sharp at the long end end??

I have no idea if that would make a difference just thinking if it could then perhaps that's the reason for nearly 3m close focus...?

I think colour seporation can be more of a issue for close focus.
and teleconverters slow down focusing, varies with the lens ofcourse

Dunno. There will be some compromises for sure though the easy way of getting a zoom to focus close these days is to reduce effective focal length (so-called focus breathing) and 2.7m suggests that maybe this hasn't been excessive here. Good news for birders that need all the focal length they can get at close range for small critters.
