New to Canon

Hi Guys,

well, just sold the 600mm, put the rest of the Sony kit on the 'bay and making the switch to Canon.

Initially, I'm looking for a 7D and 500mm f4.

Probably been asked before, but for all you Canon Pro's out there:

What would be your 'wish list' for lenses to fill the gap from UWA to the 500mm?

I'm not a pro but do use Canon. My wishlist would be:

16-35 L Series
24-105 or 24-70
70-200 F2.8 IS II
1.4 Extender III
2.0 Extender III

For the 7D I would go for

10-22
17-55
70-200 f/2.8 IS (f/4 IS would be my choice as the f/2.8 is a bit weighty for me)
1.4 Extender for the above
500 f/4

Not a pro, but do have the first two on the list and about to acquire a 400 f/5.6. Would really like the 500mm, but haven't got five grand to spare and not likely to have either i'm afraid

70 - 200 f2.8 IS L

Not sure about the extenders, maybe go for a prime 500 f4 IS L
I suppose a 2.0 extender would take you up to 400mm

Bit surprised at both of your choices for a 7D, would be more suitable for a full frame I would have thought, nothing ultra wide there which the OP requested.

I have the 7D's baby brother, the 550D. I used to fervently wish Canon would bring out a 70-300 L lens to go with it. I could wage a serious reign of terror amongst the North West of England's population of cute little furry animals with such a combination.

Christmas came several month's early this year, on August 26th, to be precise. Next march, when the price has dropped to something a little more sensible, I'm taking the plunge.

As I would like to stick to fast lenses, the 16-35 f2.8 L seems preferable...but is it wide enough, will you notice 6mm at the wide end compared to the 10-22 and if I buy a F/F in the future, am I right in thinking that the 10-22 won't fit and the 16-35 will fit both?

24-70 f2.8 seems like a nice choice but a bit of an overlap with the 16-35

Is there no IS with these lenses?

Only you can answer that. But for many people, no.

Yes. There's a HUGE difference between 10mm and 16mm.

Correct.

Canon seem to think that some overlap is desirable. For example in the EF-S range the comparable lenses are the 10-22 and the 17-55.

Correct. However the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM does have IS, and it's fast, and optically it's as good as the "L"s. But it doesn't have the "L" build quality and it's not full-frame compatible.

The other suggestions are great full-frame setups, but if you're going to be staying with crop for a while, I don't think it gets better than that. I found 24mm to be too long for a walkabout, and even at 16mm it wouldn't be ultra-wide on a 7D.

If you're thinking about upgrading to FF in the future, but the 10-22 and 17-55 secondhand, they keep their value very well indeed, so you could sell them for a minimal loss

Think the next step is to buy the 7D, either new or, if used, it may come with a lens which will steer me in one direction or another.
