just bought my first dslr which is a canon EOS 500D, been trying to get some nice blurrred shots of waterfall using different shutter speeds, im getting the effect i want with the water but the backgrounds seem to be out of focus for some reason, I know my problems are down to inexperince of slr cameras and all their different settings but any tips or advice will be gratefully recieved, thanks!

a question of balancing shutter speed with aperture with ISO rating

say you use 2secs to slow the water to the ''milky''effect [not my fav BTW..:D]
then your aperture may be 'large' eg f2.8 which will give a small DOF - depth of field.

You want about f8 to get a good DOF for landscapes so you then need to UP the ISO from the camera default of say ISO200 to ISO 1600 which will allow you to use a smaller aperture ie f8

higher ISO will introduce 'noise' - experiment to see what your camera can handle

.....and use a solid tripod with a remote release or the self-timer to eliminate shake

For blurred water you need a sturdy tripod, very dim light and a high aperture (f/8 or more) or a ND filter to lower the light hitting the sensor, as to get the effect you need a shutter speed of at least 1 second, which in normal light will just end up very bright white.

thinki can just about get to grips with all of that, thanks, will let you know how i get on in the future
