new to macro

Hi, I've only joined this forum today, i took the following pics using a canon SX10IS, Lensmate ring, UV filter and Raynox DCR-250 on a Giottos tripod. No flash used.
is it ok for a beginner?

i've got another pic of the fly where the head is in focus but the rest isn't, whats the best setting to overcome this?

Pretty good I'd say I'm not familiar with your kit, but generally if you can stop down to f11 or even f16 you should get max depth of field. This will slow your shutter speed though so without a flash this maybe a problem.
