New to night long exposure

Hello!
I only have a Canon 350d so obviously, night long exposure shots are incredibly hard for me to do properly. Although tonight I thought why not go sit in the garden and get a photo of the run down barn and street lights in the background and it came out like this, I was ecstatic.

I like it and would have been pleased with it. Where was the light on the front coming from?

you might get some more comments if you could include the image in your post rather than just a link. Also wondering why the 350d is hard to use for night photography (I don't know anything about Canon so apologies if it's something obvious)
