Hi, I've just purchased a Nikon d40 and I would love to get some good wildlife shots. I was out watching hares yesterday morning and got within 25 yards or so of several. What lens would I need to photograph the hares at this range?

Kind Regards
Gavin

Thers the first mistake, should have got a Canon

Welcome

You might get away with something like a 300mm + a 1.4x but your not going to get the very high quality shots you'd be expecting, but you'd probably be able to get something usable.

For any type of wildlife photography you need to spend some money and get a 500mm. There is the cheaper option of say a 300mm with a 2xtc but you will be regretting it after a while.

D40 is a good camera you will enjoy it, best of luck with your photography

Gavin, take no notice of Stephen, you done right by getting a camera and not a canon.....;)

:woot: sorry, a little bored this morning.

It depends where you are too. I get a lot of swan/duck/geese pictures with a 105mm and a 70-300mm... :) And there's magpies/rabbits around here too that I can get reasonably close to. I'm not sure how far 25yds is, but is sitting quietly in a field until they come closer an option? :)

unless you can budget over £500 for a lens you will be looking at a 70-300mm lens. You may be able to get one of the sigma lenses that does 400mm for under £500 however if you take the advice of the 500mm folk you will need more than £500.
Personally I say get yourself a 70-300mm and get your fieldcraft down so you can get yourself closer to the wildlife.

A 300mm lens will allow you to capture good detail at approx 10 metres, maybe more dpending on the light and your technique.

You should be able to find a 2nd hand Sigma 170-500 for under £500 - Mifsuds have one in stock (well, in their magazine ad) for £429 and if it's the one I traded in with them, it's absolutely mint, boxed with all paperwork etc. Sorry, can't remember if it's HSM (which you'll need for AF on a D40 - the 150-500 OS Sigma IS HSM so will AF on your camera but is a little more expensive!).
