 Hi all, as the title says, Me and the wife are looking to get a digital slr, got a budget of around £400. Wont be used for anything too fancy, mainly portraits of kids and the usual holiday type snaps and landscapes. any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Rob

You can afford just about any consumer level SLR, offerings from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax, etc. Also - second hand with lens as well is feasible with 400 quid. I got a 450D with 18-55 for 400 quid.

I won't make decisions for you and I won't reproduce what Google can but I will say with 400 quid you WILL be able to get your paws on an SLR of some flavour. Happy hunting.

get to jessops/currys etc and have a play with them all and see which feels best for you to use. then go home and have look on line or here and see who does it the cheapest.

thanks for the quick reply! got pointed in the direction of this site via another forum site, wanted to get honest feedback from people who actually use the cameras. did you get pay 400 for a new or used camera?

Used - but you honestly wouldn't have known it was tbh. A 450D for that price is fairly good as well.

Rob,

There are some great bargains to be had on the classifieds from time to time. The 450d is a great camera as i am sure the Nikon d80 is too. You could easily pick up a 450d and a canon 50mm f1.8 for £400 and the photos of your kids will blow you away. I just put a mint condition 450d on the classifieds for £280 which is a steal. The lens would cost you a further £60 meaning you would still have £60 for whatever else you wanted such as a bag etc.

jessops have a canon 1000d with 2 lenses, bag and sd card for £549. is that a good camera for the price?

depends what the lenses were. 1000d is 450d's little brother - they're very similar

Jessops is not known for being a cheap shop so if i was you i would look elsewhere. Decide on a body by reading some reviews then get lenses to suit your needs. If it is portrait type shots of your kids then for canons you can't beat the 50mm f1.8 for the money. It can produce fantastic results.
