Hi
I have just joined tonight and not too sure what I am doing. I wanted to ask about HND photography courses done through distance learning. Can anyone recommend any?

That makes two of us! I joined today too and have since been searching the topics inputting where I can. Be careful though, people are often very rude if your opinion is different to theirs. I've been here for about 2 hours and have seen a lot of it. If you're looking for specific information, try creating a new topic and wait for replies. :)

This is a large and very good forum. Most here are friendly but it's sad to see your experience so far has had this impression. :'(

To the OP: Sorry can't help, but I do remember having a conversation with a retired teacher, (about 12 years ago) who was invited to some open day to become a mentor/tutor for a distance learning school/company. The main thing I remember him saying was on the lines that once students payed their fees the job was basically making it uninteresting so the student will drop out.
The Moral..Beware what you choose I suppose. Good luck.

Jared - if you've seen anything where you think people have been rude in that way, please don't hesitate to press the RTM button (the little red triangle) and report it... it's a big forum, and while there are quite a few moderators around, we don't have the time or resources to read every single post. Therefore we rely on our members to bring incidents like this to light. I have to say, that compared to other fora, this one is probably one of the best behaved i've experienced, largely due to the actions of our wonderful members.

Dawn - i'm sorry to have hijacked your thread - but i'd definitely advise creating a specific thread to ask your question, preferably with the question in the thread title.

Jared, I can only back up what Nigel has said and there are a lot of us that are friendly on here. As Mark has pointed out, if you feel the need to report something, let them know...

Hi Dawn and Welcome

Can't help you with any courses specifically, but those that you look at, make sure it's what you want... You don't want to do a course that is heavy photoshop orientated, if you want to learn about your camera mainly and visa versa....

Here is a good place to learn, ask questions, no matter how basic, we will try to help out.

Have you got a camera, what do you have ?

Hope you do find it a helpful place, look forward to maybe seeing some of your work...

What level are you at now?

If you are a complete novice, I would recommend spending 12 months learning how to use your equipment. Post photos on here, get critique and advice, try again. You will make mistakes, we all do, but learn from them. Practice and enjoy what you do. Once you feel you have gained a basic understanding, then by all means take a course. I can`t recommend any as I have never done one, but there are a lot of very good, very knowledgable and very helpful people on here, save your money and hang around for a bit.............:)

First of all welcome.

I'll echo the advice above, unless you want the HND for other reasons (UCAS points etc), it learn the basics yourself (understanding exposure is meant to be a really good book) along with posting images on here for critique.

Then when you have got the basics nailed, exposure etc and have an idea of what you want to shoot (landscape/animals/portraits etc) go on a course tailored to that kind of shooting.
